Duolingo without speaking, etc.

Hi everyone,

I am learning Spanish on my lunch breaks at work for about an hour each day, and then practicing using the mobile app on my commute home. In both circumstances I don't use a microphone, so i almost never actually speak Spanish, only when I am at home showing off to my family.

Has anybody else got far by doing this? Now I am up to level 8 I think that maybe i should start talking to myself in Spanish at home for some practice! I don't feel too comfortable sitting at my desk or on the train/bus using the microphone.

I was also wondering how much time people spend learning compared to practicing? I tend to practice a lot more than learn new areas so maybe the XP I gain from practicing may mean my level 8 is not a great measure of my ability. For anyone who cares I just finished the household / sizes/ occupation sections.

Thanks!

I have never used the microphone when using Duo (nearly two years, tree done, a couple of long streaks -- 176 and 204 days) and am much better at speaking than listening. You can talk to yourself inside your head and develop decent speaking skills. I don't think points/levels mean much. To measure your ability you can spend a few lingots and take the test.

I don't use the microphone when I use Duo because I don't think Duo is a very good judge of how well I'm pronouncing things. Also I frequently use Duo without speakers because I'm in an environment where the sound would be disruptive. I do, however, use the speakers at home and try to say the sentence along with Duo, and then by myself. I also put the sentence into Google translate and say the sentence along with that voice. Unlike rspreng, I cannot develop decent speaking skills by talking to myself inside my head. Well, it does help me practice vocabulary and sentence structure, but I have to actually use my mouth and vocal cords and practice making the sounds before I am any good at it. I'm usually really awful on my first few attempts :)

I do the same! I practice everyday but I don't go over new lessons often. I make sure I understand everything and I keep my tree golden. I'm at level 13 but I still am at Feelings / Pres. Per.. I don't use the microphone anymore but I do read everything out loud when I practice at home.
