Now what is the difference between "giorno" and "giornata"?

One difference: "Buon giorno/sera" is a greeting, while "Buona giornata/serata" are wishes (meaning something on the lines of "Enjoy rest of the day/evening)"

Since I am not that qualified to explain all the differences here is one useful link: http://blogs.transparent.com/italian/giorno-or-giornata/
