Tu n'achètes pas de riz

Is there a rule for when to use just "de" and when to use "du" or "de la". It doesn't seem to be consistent, for food for example it's "de la nourriture" but for rice it's "de riz" when I thought it would be "du riz". Can anyone help?

Tu achètes du riz
     Tu n'achètes pas de riz
Tu achètes de l'eau
     Tu n'achètes pas d'eau
Tu achètes de la moutarde
     Tu n'achètes pas de moutarde

Use de (or d') with a negation.
