'We're throwing a party for his birthday' is also extremely common in (UK) english. Doubt Duo would like it though.

we have a party for his birthday (every year) / we are having a party for .... in another earlier question in this unit i went for plain present (and it was wrong) and here not (and was wrong again).... how can i tell which is which? seems to all be in present tense to me
