Motivation hacks AND additional French learning!

Hi everyone!!

We love duolingo <3 BUT If you're ever feeling in a rut and need to switch up your modes of learning and enchance your listening skills, I just wanted to offer some useful motivational tactics and alternative learning modules that a French professor passed on to me.

  1. Listen to French music on your music streaming service... go the extra mile by reading the lyrics along with the song. Then look at the translation. This is a great way to pick up slang and alternative sentence structures for more casual conversation.

  2. Watch French films with subtitles on Hulu or Netflix. (For even more difficulty, watch with out subtitles). Again, a great way to pick up more conversational skills by observing pragmatic use of the language in a modern context.

  3. Watch this awesome entry-level series from the Discovery channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaNqp4FXh-s It's super cheesy but it's so exciting when you understand 50% of what they are saying.

I have found that switching up my learning from time to time and exposing myself to more advanced french is the greatest motivator for me, because I want to be able to understand what they are saying one day!! And those little moments when you actually understand a phrase with out looking at the translation is the most gratifying feeling! Hope this helps :)

HAPPY LEARNING!

Thanks so much! I agree that the more you mix it up, the faster you learn.

Here's a weekly quiz: https://www.ouest-france.fr/leditiondusoir/data/88892/reader/reader.html#!preferred/1/package/88892/pub/126215/page/22

One thing that helped me a little: There's a nice free phone app called Radio France with news, podcasts, etc. in French. I'm not sure if it's available outside of Europe, but I don't see why it shouldn't be.
