I didn't understand there answer: I am awaiting something

why this "A" awaiting?

My answer was I am waiting something something and it was considered correct, BUT I'm curious about that "A". Can anybody explain to me please? I appreciated.

I'm not a native English speaker, so my best guess would be that "waiting" and "awaiting" have a slightly different meaning? Could a native speaker comment on this?

I'm waiting on some things ?

Many people i know say the phrase that way. Is that an acceptable translation?
