Join the movement to bring Hebrew to Duolingo!
Hello, I am a Hebrew speaker that lives in Israel, and I think that I am able to begin with my friend a course to learn Hebrew. I know how to speak Hebrew and English well enough. What do you think?
Comment to show your support, I read every single comment.
Thank you all for your nice comments!
I can't help thinking that Hebrew for Arabic and Arabic for Hebrew should be fairly high up the priority list.
They're relatively similar languages! (shalom aleichem / as-salamu alaykum)
Technically they are, but learning Arabic is quite difficult even for Hebrew speakers.
Just want to remind everyone here what the forum is all about: language learning. Hateful comments will be deleted. Please take a look at the Community Guidelines here: http://www.duolingo.com/guidelines.
Keep posted on new language directions being added to Duolingo here: http://www.incubator.duolingo.com. Glad to hear so many people are excited about new language directions being added :)
I applied to contribute to Hebrew for English speakers and to English for Hebrew speakers. So far I haven't heard back from Duolingo. I guess that they will open the course in the Incubator when there will be enough contributors.
Same here. I want to contribute. Very familiar with Duolingo, finished the English->German tree and scored 10.0/10 in the Duolingo English test center.
I am always interested in the history of the Jewish religion, even though I'm not Jewish. It's always interesting.
As a native speaker of both English and Hebrew, I applied as well. I really hope Duolingo gives us an opportunity to teach this wonderful language and culture.
That would be awesome! I'd really appreciate a Hebrew course here on Duolingo!
Yes! I would love a Hebrew course! I would learn it on Duolingo in a heartbeat.
If a Hebrew course for English speakers is created, I'll be on that Day One! And yes, I voted in the poll.
Hebrew and Japanese are the ones I'm holding my breath for. I know there are other ways to study, but I love this system!!! Duolingo is awesome!
Yup, I also applied to contribute (Israeli and whatnot). I think it's gonna take a while before a Hebrew-English course is added to the incubator, but it's so great to see that so many people are interested!
I love the look of the Hebrew alphabet, would definitely like to learn some Hebrew on Duo :)
Last time I was in this thread, there was a very hateful comment that had been given at least 40 lingots, but this thread only had about 15. I just thought it would be a shame for someone offering to contribute to have less than someone who was being highly inappropriate without ever having been provoked. I know you can't do much with them, but still have them.
I've always wanted to learn Hebrew! You have my support. It would be really amazing to get a Hebrew course on here!
חחחח אני רואה שיש הרבה מתנדבים, מוזר שלא דיברו איתכם. אני חושבת שפשוט אין להם זמן עכשיו.
From what I've seen on the Discussions, a lot of people have applied to contribute. Maybe once Irish and Danish are released (soon, soon...), they will add new languages, including Hebrew.
I probably wouldn't learn it but it would be cool to have a Hebrew course. The more languages the better!
I would love Hebrew to be included! I've always wanted to learn it, but never had any way of doing it.
You would absolutely change my life. I have been looking for something to teach me Hebrew but no one has ANYTHING. Do it, you would have a Loyal supporter forever.
Exactly! I've always wanted to learn Hebrew too and it would have been my first choice for a language if they had it on Duolingo.
It's true, no one has anything... Except Memrise, a bit... But it would be awesome that a course started here!
Yes! Hebrew! Come on, Duolingo. Please put Hebrew in the incubator next! You can put Yiddish in the incubator but not Hebrew? What???!!!
Hebrew was one of the options on the poll for deciding which languages should next be added to the incubator. (I was going to say it IS one of the options, but the poll closed yesterday :/) The results for the poll will be released later today (30th) so I hope on behalf of everyone here that Hebrew got a lot of votes
I am always inspired by people of Israel because of their high intelligence and fighting spirit. I would love to know Hebrew. I am interested to know history of Jewish people and literature though am not from Israel. I fully support you.
I sent a request to help work on it, as I am also a native hebrew/English speaker. That was quite a while ago, but so many people have asked me to teach them hebrew, or to point them to a site that can teach hebrew. Duolingo is my all time favourite language learning site, so i would love to point them to here.
אל אל ישראל!!
עם ישראל חי!
Also my support! :) and wish you all success in formation the course!
I would LOVE A HEBREW COURSE! I tried another program that did not work and duolingo works great for german!
Hey Itay, how are you doing,I'll join you, here an extra lingot.
Good luck on making more votes!=)
i almost didn't join duolingo because they didn't have hebrew but i did and i love it
It would be great if you get the course rolling - and I'm pretty sure that I'd take it, even from English. My hebrew is limited to some catch-phrases ( like "shalom", "La coba sheli shilosh pinot ", if I could express myself better it is supposed to mean something like "My hat, it has three corners, Three corners has my hat") I never had the patience to look into the writing, and Duolingo would be perfect. My main purpose would be to impress some Israeli friends. I have no intends to read the bible, whatsoever.
I'm donating five lingots to your course (not sure if this changes anything)
I would love to see a Hebrew for English speakers course if it were possible, but it would have to include a hebrew alphabet keyboard somehow.
It should be a simple matter for Duolingo itself to convert input Latin characters into their Hebrew counterparts in fields meant to accept only Hebrew. There are only 22 letters in Hebrew, after all. The problem of indicating final forms and niqqud is akin to using capital letters and diacritics in Latin-based languages. I should point out, though, that the ability to input niqqud is not needed.
It's actually real easy to get a Hebrew Keyboard on Windows, googling it should give you simple, step by step instructions, or you could figure it out, as it is a setting in the control panel.
I have Windows 8, English computer:
I would be interested in learning Hebrew for English speakers. Let the incubation begin!
Now that Hebrew won the recent poll, I hope the course will happen as soon as possible. I've been wanting to contribute to this course for such a long. I first applied for it months ago.
!תמשיכו לתמוך ותחזיקו אצבעות
That would be great, ItayKoM2! I'm still learning Spanish right now and don't think I could take on another language right now, but later I would love to learn at least some Hebrew. It is such an interesting language with an amazing history. I'm sure there are many people who would like to learn Hebrew.
Oh yes!!!!! My Hebrew is very limited and I'd love to expand on my knowledge!!!!!
It sounds just amazing!! Get a Lingot!! Thanks a lot for this awesome idea! :-D
I applied to the hebrew incubator also and still got not reply.
אני רוצה לעזור לך!
"I applied to the hebrew incubator also and still got not reply." כן גם אני חחח נקווה שהם יענו בקרוב
I applied to contribute to Hebrew too. I would love to see a Hebrew course on duolingo! I lived in Israel up until 4 years ago when I moved to the states. I was actually just visiting Israel 3 days ago and I was so happy to see my hometown Haifa doing great!
I agree, I am so interested in this language! Maybe one day I can read the Old Testament in its original language :).
I really hope that Duolingo does create a Hebrew for English speakers course. I look forward to the day that this comes to fruition. I encourage you to pursue that goal. Thank you, have a lingot!
ken, ken, ken, marvelous idea; I'm currently learning Hebrew, but it's not easy to find a somewhat complete course for free, never mind duolingo style! please pursue it. beh-va-ka-sha. to-da
I've always wanted to learn Hebrew my people heritage, But, I never did! You have my support. It would be really amazing to get a Hebrew course on here!
One of the first languages I looked for on Duo was Hebrew. It'd be so great if this was available. I'm not sure if there's a place to vote but consider this my vote. !אני אוהב את עברית
I would love to learn Hebrew! I guess they're waiting for some courses to graduate to beta before they start on other courses(like Hebrew).
I've been opting for Hebrew on Duo for so long :p I voted for it in all of the Language Pools
Yes, please :D I know the alephbet already, would be glad to learn more
I support it. I am learning Arabic at the moment because I can't find sites to teach me Hebrew.
They added Yiddish to the incubator before Hebrew... Seriously??? You have to be kidding me lol.
Itay Kom, please do it! I know that this discussion is old, but that would be really amazing!
I am a native Hebrew speaker as well, and my English is good enough for working on a special Hebrew for English speakers course, I would like to help, too!
i would absolutely love to learn Hebrew!! my great grandparents spoke hebrew (along with yiddish, ukranian and english) and i would so love to be able learn it as well!! crossing my fingers come on duolingo!
I'm really just biding my time here learning Spanish and French. What I'm really waiting to learn is HEBREW! :)
Considering that a lot of cutting edge scientific research is done in Israel, I would think there would be a lot of demand for more web pages to be translated between the two languages.
I think it will be nice, though I think it's a hard language (I'm from Israel so I can't really tell) and people could have troubles learning it, though it will be nice!
Please add Hebrew. I love Doulingo, it is the best way to learn a new language.
