Translation: As similar as two herring.

I translated this as "As like as two herring" , but was told that I had a typo (should have been "alike"). I stick by my translation, which is what I would both say and write. While I agree that "alike" is a possible, but rather ponderous, translation, would anyone else have used "like"?
