Doesn't the i negate the accented a? I thought the accent lengthens the vowel and the i shortens it...


The i indicates that the following consonant is palatalised/slender, it has no bearing on the length of a preceding vowel. So <àid> spells /a:dʲ/ while <àd> spells /a:d/.
