Well, to answer your question, no, but I had studied Spanish a little bit before. I also have not put what I learned into practice as much as I would like. This being said, I learned more from Duolingo than I did in 4 college classes and also had more fun. I think it is very useful.

Congratulations! That is a huge step. What you need now, if you don't already have one, is a language exchange partner. I found mine at mixxer.com. Also, try to find a Spanish conversation group! I found mine at meetup.com.

Good idea (mixer.com and meetup.com). I have not tried it yet, but thanks for posting!

That's right. I should have checked. It's still called the Mixxer but they have a different URL. Great site.

Good idea. Maybe you could volunteer at a church or school to teach English to Spanish speakers. I have tried to watch Spanish TV channels and to listen to Spanish radio. Have fun!

Congrates..!!! Do you think Spanish course is good for beginners, who are starting from scratch ? After finishing tree on DL , can a new person at least read newspapers and books ?

https://www.duolingo.com/yerfavagent

I finished the tree about two months ago. To answer your question, no I cannot completely read a newspaper, At first glance I can get the idea of the story, then if I take a bit of time I can understand a lot of the story but there are a lot of words I don't know yet. Duolingo gives you about 1500 words, to understand and speak Spanish in everyday situations I believe you will need about 3000 words. Don't be dismayed though, you have to walk before you can run. I can do lots, Its great being able to express myself in a sentence, ask for things and usually somewhat understand what is being said to me. Duolingo also gives you a good grasp on grammar too, which is so important, so all i really need now is more vocabulary, practice and confidence. I did the entire Spanish course on my phone, though a laptop would be better (I only looked at the laptop version when I was 90% finished the tree)! Truthfully I was a little lost after finishing the tree, I thought, "now where do I go" so someone had mentioned Yabla.com which teaches Spanish via short videos, I am doing that, I also found another vocab app (there are millions I am sure) called "Fun Easy Learn." I have another app called quizlet which allows me to create my own vocab lists and finally I intend to try meetup.com as recommended by Mark Stivers which is a site that has local Spanish speaking groups. Speaking of confidence, I was with my wife recently and we were in a chiringuito, a beach restaurant. I was very reluctant to speak any Spanish to the waiter, I didn't want to make a fool of myself, anyway, we were enjoying a nice plate of assorted fried fish and a glass of Rose when we noticed a quite a few feral cats had started to gather around us. Then a cat jumped onto the table and grabbed a piece of fish, My wife literally ran out of the restaurant, moments later the waiter arrived, I was fuming at this stage and had no problem at all in telling the waiter in Spanish what had happened, how unhappy we were and why we were leaving, my Spanish was most probably broken but he understood me perfectly well, its just a matter of confidence. So that's my honest opinion, hope it helps!

Thank you very much for taking time to answer my query. Your post is really encouraging to me. I am learning German through DL and other sources on youtube. Parallely, am starting Spanish course through DL only. By your opinion, after completing Spanish course on DL, I shall get some base and then I have to focus on vocabullury and grammer. . I shall follow the other study materials you mentioned after finishing course on DL for enhancement. Thanx a ton once again ....Happy studying !!!

Thanks for those sites. I'll be sure to have a look at them after I finish my tree :)

https://www.duolingo.com/zgold88

Well im biased because I didnt start from scratch. I did start German though and yeah I think its useful and works for beginners. I think you should supplement with other mterial too though. Reading and watching videos.

https://www.duolingo.com/zgold88

No not really. It was fun for me. I did get frustrated when DL would mark me wrong for minor mistakes and it also got really frustrating at the end. Thats because I was rushing to be done, though.

Congratulations! you gave me a boost!

You'll get there buddy. Just focus on what you are learning and make it worthwhile. Then when you see you're almost done, you'll stop talking to family and friends and just duolingo til its done haha. At least that's what I did.

No. A finished tree yields XP only enough for Lv 11 or 12, if one does not do much revision / immersion.

I have finished DE, FR, EO, IT, and ES trees.
