Surely 'had' is imperfect in this context and 'devait' would be a better translation than 'a du' ?

I believe "that stinks" is too dialectical/regional to be useful in this course. A better choice would be either a literal translation or something more neutral.

what is difference between dû and fallu? I wrote "Max a fallu travailler dimanche dernier, c'est nul" and it is not accepted.

your sentence : "Max a fallu travailler dimanche dernier," doesn't exist in French (sorry ;-)).but this exists : "Il a fallu que Max travaille etc...". With "falloir", you can only use "il". we say :" c'est un verbe impersonnel". (but the technical word is not very important !) You also can say ":"Il fallait que", "il faudra que", "il faudrait que".
