Do you really use "tomar" in this case? "Durar" seems to fit a lot better for this sentence.

"Demorar" also works in the context - it's the most common in Colombia

I have just used "durar" and it was not accepted. Maybe duolinguo has not already updated the sentence (february 2014).

I think that "tomar" or "llevar" are the most suitable words for "take" in this exercise with no other context. It does not specify any possible delay/retard implied in "tardar"/"demorar" (~tarry), or continuity/permanence in "durar" (=last).
