When do we add an "a" to a noun?

Could it be The ceiling is black? Katto can mean either roof or ceiling, depending on the case (katolla - on the roof, katossa - on the ceiling). But if it is in nominative, which meaning is implied?

Ceiling would work here.

Technically, 'ceiling' is sisäkatto (literally "inside roof") but people usually just say katto.
