"Mies on shamaani."

Translation:The man is a shaman.

June 26, 2020

A shaman: is a person regarded as having access to, and influence in, the world of good and evil spirits, especially among some peoples of northern Asia and North America. Typically such people enter a trance state during a ritual, and practice divination and healing

I would have spelt it "šamaani"

The letter "š" used to be common in loanwords with the sh-sound, and so you can see it in older books. Nowadays the recommended way to write these words is with "sh" instead, but of course it's not a crime to use "š" either.

I would be curious to know where that recommendation is from. Kielitoimiston ohjepankki suggests samaani and šamaani as correct spellings. http://www.kielitoimistonohjepankki.fi/ohje/149

Considering the status of shamans vs. general "magicians", this should only translate into shaman and not both, right?

Right. The most common translation for 'magician' is taikuri.
