Strange animal to choose...are they popular in Finland?

Parakeets are very popular pets in Finland. Far more popular than parrots and turtles, the usual Duolingo Pets skill go-to's. The word is also much easier for non-natives to learn than papukaija ("bean psittaculidae"), or kilpikonna ("shield toad"). 🦜

Parakeets (or parrots)—like dogs and cats—are popular pets worldwide. I am pretty sure that Finland is no exception to this! :P

And they are quite lovely rascals. <3

Tbh I think budgie would be the correct translation.

It would be if translating into British English. But Duo's default is American. The Amercans call a budgie a parakeet.

So that's what a parakeet is! Kiitos! :D

Can it be translated as "parrot" as well?

No... A parrot is a 'papukaija'..
