"if nobody is setting the table, we will eat on the ground" is wrong? why?

I used "ground" also, and it was accepted. Is it possible that you might have had a typo somewhere?

how do you distinguish between sitting on the ground or on the floor?

Some languages don't distinguish. Maybe French is one of them.

In the sentence, it still lacks un letter "on". How and where I can find it?

'we shall eat on the floor' is perfectly good English.
