For people of a certain vintage, the preferred translation for this would be "where's the beef?"

Last I heard, the dog had the steak.

The English translations for "pihvi" are "steak" and "patty". Those are two different things in English, but in Finnish it's all the same then?

Seems like it's cognate to beef. In that case, it's similar to how we use the word "biff" in Norwegian, both as the word for steak, and as a general term for ox meat.

In another comment someone observed with considerable certainty that that it's from the English "beef." So yes, I'd guess your observation was spot on.

Yes, the same word for the two. If one needs to specify, patty is "jauhelihapihvi" ("jauheliha" = minced meat")

Yeah, I think so

Do I hear that correct - the "h" in pihvi is more like a "ch" sound in German than a lighter "h" sound ? pich-vi ?
