So the 'bh' in «gobhar» is pronounced differently than the 'bh' in «èibhinn» because of broaf versus slender vowels?

Yes --I've been thinking of the consonants as being broad or slender as well as the vowels, because those are also placed high (slender) or low (broad) in your mouth. The vowels just show you that the whole chunk the surround is broad or slender.
