"Millainen … se on?"

I'm slightly confused about this. You're asking what kind of …. IS IT? Now I know that se on = it is and onko se = is it, so could someone explain to me please, why this phrase uses se on instead of onko se?

"-ko" is used if the question can be answered by "yes" or "no". If there is a different kind of question word in a sentence (e.g. "millainen", "miksi", "kuka"), there is no need to add "-ko".
