How can a veranda be warm when it is outside?

When I lived in Finland, the word ¨veranta¨never existed. Veranda was always ¨Parveke¨.

Parveke is balcony. Veranda (or porch) is on the ground level.

Veranda could be translated as kuisti (but not as parveke). In my experience kuisti is more frequent than veranta, but I've heard both used. I'm guessing they used veranta because it's easier to learn as it's such an obvious loan word.
