is there an overall ranking where we can see who has highest score and learned the most?

You can see where the people you are following stand by glancing at the leaderboard. Having an overall view into who is doing the best on Duolingo is an interesting idea. Thanks for the suggestion.

Yes I wrote the same suggestion a while back, I guess nobody read it =(. But I really think this option would enhance the game-like feeling you guys are definitely implementing. It wouldn't take any of the intrinsic motivators of learning, but would add an extra something for those interested in being the best ;), a great motivator sometimes.

The fact that you have a Leaderboard with an ordered list (by score) of friends means it already is in that respect. You don't have to add any friends, look at that list, or if an overall list does appear, ever look at that list either, to keep enjoying Duo. It's all optional.

This will likely make me think twice before adding friends, if I am going to have to compete with them.
