In English, 'we could taste' means 'we were able to taste', in the past. Now I think this should be 'pouvions'. You could (conditional) say 'We could taste this French dish if someone gave us a spoon', in which case it would be conditional: 'pourrions'. Could a native French speaker please let us know if the conditional would always be used in this case?
