What is the difference between onnellinen and iloinen?

Iloinen is joyful or glad, it's shorter and smaller feeling, e.g. you're "iloinen" that something happened or that you get to spend time with a friend and so on.

Onnellinen is much bigger and an overall feeling, you're happy with the state of your life.

It may also help you remember the difference by thinking what the root words for each are:

  • Onni = luck
  • Ilo = joy

We can be iloinen that we are onnellinen.

"Glad" should be a correct answer too.

I also make sure to scream "YAY I AM HAPPY" everytime I'm cheerful
