The onion species is called "punasipuli" in Finnish.

Maybe they are talking about "punainen sipuli". :)

How does one translate just "there?" Does Finnish default to tuossa or tuolla if there is no real context? (Likewise with "here.")

When there is no context, it's determined with the flip of a coin.

Appreciate the quick response. With my luck, the bloody coin would land on its edge and stick there...

Why is tuolla not accepted ?

Both "tuolla" and "tuossa" can translate to "there", but only "tuossa" can translate to "right there", and only "tuolla" can translate to "over there".
