Oh, and imagine that Appelflap coming fresh (not too fresh, that burns ow ow) out of the oven, and if you take a bite through the crispy, sugar coated dough, a bit of warm cinnamon spiced applesauce will flow out of it.. has fantasies about eating one for one full minute before posting the comment

one vlaai, two vlaaien or two vlaai or two vlaais that is the question. Same for appelflappen: One appelflap, two appelflappen or two appelflap, three appelflaps ? Should all be correct i think.

I think a lot of English speakers, unless they're really trying to be specific, would call "vlaai" by a more generic name, such as "tart".

Because of how it sounds in spoken English, I would be very reluctant to say "I have been eating vlaais".

With appelflap, unless I'm being a little ignorant of the differences, it's the same as an apple turnover, right?

It's easy to call "een vlaai" a tart. However, not all tarts can be considered as a "vlaai". To me personally what comes closes to "vlaai" is "flan", but with the addition that there is no savoury "vlaai" while there are savory "flans".

Here are some examples of what a tart can be which in no definition possible could be considered a "vlaai", not unless you are looking to offend lots of people:
