Ne personne is one of the negative forms, in this case the personne comes first.

I made the same mistake on another lesson. It seems that the negative construction is ne .... personne (although it's used as personne ne for the purposes of this sentence) so there's no need for 'pas'.

Not the only one, "lay the table" should work, but the table was probably made, and then purchased, quite some time before the dinner was prepared. Probably years before.
