I think the sentence is correct because: mies= man on= is (3rd person of sing.) Joni: is a name (like John). Joni on mies= Joni is a man.

That is not correct, but Duolingo seems to accept certain typos. Correct "Joni on mies" is close enough, it seems (only one wrong letter and missing space)
