En français, on trouve généralement "diplôme" trop vague alors que les catégories bac, licence, magistère, doctorat, etc. sont précises. C'est pour ça que la phrase anglaise précise aussi "bachelor's degree". La deuxième question est plus pointue. Généralement, quand on donne une durée avec un nombre, on utilise "an(s)". Quand on se concentre sur l'année, on dit "année". Mais on peut aussi parler de "plusieurs années" (pas de nombre). Pour "last year" ou "next year", les deux fonctionnent : "l'an dernier", "l'année dernière", etc.

At least in the American higher education system, a baccalaureate is a bachelor's degree! Clearly "un bac" and "une licence" refer to different levels of academic achievement, but the English translation doesn't distinguish them.
