Why is "il est devenu UN clown" wrong?

You don't use "a" or "an" before a "profession" in French .

Maybe I would have written the correct answer it the question was posed as " After having studied economics he became a clown" It's not fair to write something different to the actual translation!

I always thought that "après avoir étudié" meant "after having studied", although in this context I prefer the sentence given in the correct answer

That would be a correct literal translation indeed.

Studying "economics" and studying "the economy," are not the same thing... especially not in French!

So, how do we separate the science of economics, and the economy of the country, in French?
