Where does the "well" come from? What would the French be if you simply wanted to say "he doesn't know the region"?

It would be exactly like that. I think it's a mistake. Either "well" should be taken out of the English sentence or "bien" added before "la région" on the French one.

    Guidons is indicative. Il veut que needs the subjunctive.
