Translation:It is the smell of his cookies that I remember.

In this sentence, would it be acceptable to use "que" instead of "dont"?

dont = d'où (de+où) means "of which or that ... of" and the verb is "se souvenir de qqch". because of that "de", I don't think you could use "que". By the way this sentence made me recall "À la recherche du temps perdu" :)
