Colours in compounds:

Valkoinen -> valko

"Valkovuokko" (wood anemone), "valkoviini" (white wine), "valkosipuli" (garlic), "valkomustaraidallinen" (white and black striped)...

Sininen -> sini

"sinitiainen" (blue tit), "sinisorsa" (mallard), "sinivalas" (blue whale)...

Punainen -> puna

"puna-apila" (red clover), "punajuuri" (beetroot), "puna-armeija (the Red Army)...

Keltainen -> kelta

"keltavahvero" (chanterelle), "keltasirkku" (yellowhammer), "keltanokka" (rookie, newbie, lit. yellowbeak)

Vihreä -> viher "vihersalaatti" (green salad), "viherpeukalo" (green thumb) "punavihervärisokeus" (red-green colour blindness)

Colours such as "musta" "harmaa", "ruskea" and "oranssi" are not shortened in compounds.

Watch out for the occasional genitive -n ending though.

"mustanruskea" - blackish brown

"mustaruskearaidallinen sukka" - a black and brown striped sock

"harmaanvalkoinen" - grayish white

"valkoharmaa t-paita" - a white and gray t-shirt

I've often why Finns call a mallard "blue duck" when none of it is actually blue, even the sheen on the drake's head and the speculum are green. (that little coloured patch which is usually hidden in the wing.)

Asking the real questions here. Goes in the same category as "salmon snake" (dragon) and "wolf pole/shaft" (dragonfly). "Knowledge machine" (computer) is logical though.

I think "blue-white" and similar expressions should also be accepted.

How about bluish white?

As a Finn I would translate that to sinertävän valkoinen. White with a blue tint or hue.

Look at the Finnish flag for example, it's not bluish white. It's blue and white. Blue-white.

I was just coming here to suggest the same thing.

would "white and blue" be "valkosininen" or does order not matter?
