Leaderboard per Languages
I really like this website and it's really well done. The leaderboards are handy to boost yourself against your friend, but it would be even better to have leaderboards per languages.
Is it a possible feature?
It's possible! I will make sure to mention this to the rest of the team. It would be interesting to compare where you are with other community members learning the same language.
If you do anything like this, I think you shouldn't just count the points, but also somehow mark whether or not the person has finished the tree. Some people have very high scores without having finished their trees, I think there is an interesting difference.
Please also consider that this may provide additional incentives for 'point hunters'. I don't see anything inherently wrong with collecting lots of points but we had a case just this week with a user vandalising translations by just copying the original text, presumably to quickly earn easy points. I'm concerned that incentives to game the system will increase dramatically as soon as there is some sort of public leaderboard.
You get vandalism everywhere, even (especially?) on Wikipedia where there are no points. Duolingo is popular, so naturally there will be vandals, probably nothing to do with points.
Statistics is not an all-or-nothing thing. The introduction of leaderboards might shift the distribution of user behavior towards gaming the system – with an increased rate of vandalism as a possible side effect. That's what I'm concerned about.
I just noticed that I may have misread netbe's suggestion. Just for the sake of clarity: are you suggesting a global leaderboard for all duolingo members or just a language filter for the current leaderboard for you and your friends? I supposed the former, but on a second read it sounds more like the latter ;-) As far as the filter is concerned, I don't have any objections at all ;-)
I would like to see a global leaderboard with the information about those who finished their trees. It is interesting to know who has finished two, three, maybe even four trees. Also, it would be nice to know who has the most points in general and in every specific language.
Yes indeed I meant only a filter on the friends' leaderboard. I don't really see the point for global leaderboard for now
Hey guys. Is this topic with the "language leaderboard" against friends still on? This would be an awesome feature and would motivate to practice even more.
Yes, please. I wanted to start competing with a friend in Spanish, but I'm also working on French. This gives me an advantage on the leaderboards, even if I'm worse than him in Spanish...
