Examples of various verb tenses in french

Hopefully this can help some of you when trying to determine how to translate your verb tenses. Those with (L.) are only used in a literary sense and (sometimes) very formal speech.

Présent : Je le prends = I'm taking it, I take it, I do take it

Futur : Je le prendrai = I will take it

Futur Parfait : Je l'aurai pris = I will have taken it

Conditionnel : Je le prendrais = I would take it

Conditionnel Parfait : Je l'aurais pris = I would have taken it

Conditionnel Parfait (L.) : Je l'eusse pris = I would have taken it

Imparfait : Je le prenais = I was taking it, I used to take it

Passé Composé : Je l'ai pris = I took it, I have taken it, I did take it

Passé Simple (L.) : Je le pris = I took it

Plus-que-parfait : Je l'avais pris = I had taken it

Passé Antérieur (L.) : Je l'eus pris = I had taken it

Subjonctif : ...que je le prenne = ...that I take it

Subjonctif Imparfait (L.) : ...que je le prisse = ...that I took it

Subjonctif Passé : ...que je l'aie pris = ...that I had taken it

Subjonctif Plus-que-parfait (L.) : ...que je l'eusse pris = ...that I had taken it

Here's a list I've used in the past (printed it out and stuck it on the wall in front of my desk). It has slightly different goals than yours, emphasising more common constructions.

He is selling the house: Il vend la maison

He was selling the house: Il vendait la maison

He sold the house: Il a vendu la maison

He has been selling the house for a long time: Il vend la maison depuis longtemps

The house is sold: La maison est vendu

The house was sold: La maison était vendu

The house has been sold: La maison a était vendu

He will sell the house: Il vendra la maison

He's going to sell the house: Il va vendre la maison

The house will be sold: La maison sera vendu

The house is going to be sold: La maison va être vendu

He would sell the house: Il vendrait la maison

The house would be sold: La maison serait vendu

If he had sold the house: S’il avait vendu la maison

If the house had been sold: Si la maison avait était vendu

He will have sold the house: Il aura vendu la maison

The house will have been sold: La maison aura était vendu

He would have sold the house: Il aurait vendu la maison

The house would have been sold: La maison aurait était vendu
