I offered "murheellinen." What's the distinction? I've heard both. Are they interchangeable?

They're not too far from each other, 'murheellinen' is probably a little bit stronger feeling, "sorrowful". If breaking the words into pieces:

  • surullinen -> suru = sadness
  • murheellinen -> murhe = sorrow, grief

I also feel like 'murheellinen' would be more common in written language, or you can hear that in movies or songs.

Thank you. Very useful explanation. As for songs, yes, I suppose I was thinking of Eppu Normaali and "Murheellisten laulujen maa," which probably dates me a little.

That song was the first thing to come to my mind as well when I was thinking of this word.
