Don't worry about the streak, I lost my 120 day streak on holiday but I still practice whenever I can, in Spanish they say:

La practica hace al maestro

Indeed. Just a little observation: you missed the accent there (not sure if "accent" is the right word): "práctica". :-)

I can empathize, having just lost mine. I was only around 26 days, I think, when Mother Nature decided to strike the place with lightning and the modem blew up...lol..I was without internet and phone for about three days.

https://www.duolingo.com/inguhzee

yikes! no internet for three days??? my sincerest apologies.

https://www.duolingo.com/Sannent

It sure does! I lost mine once on 26. That hurt; I didn't come back for four days. But then I started again and am now on 70. Feels good. But need a freezer that lasts for 2, or ideally 3 days, because in a few months I'll be traveling halfway across the planet: that would be about 40 hours of flying and moving around. The problem is you can only buy one streak freeze at a time!

For some reason I can't reply to any of the replies to my post (nested too deep?).

But I can reply to myself ;)

I'm sure there are lots of people with more than me. I just wish we had some new items to spend them on. I pretty much have everything except the tracksuit which doesn't appeal to me.

I haven't got any points that I know of for translating articles. I've only done a few.

Most are from:

  • Continuing my streak (every 10th day I get (#days/10) lingots).

  • Getting perfect in a new exercise on the web and Android apps.

  • Leveling up (granted lingots corresponding to the level number). I have finished the English->Spanish tree and I am almost finished the reverse tree.

  • Getting perfect when reinforcing a skill that has been completed but then turns back from gold to its original color (only on the Android app). For some reason the web app doesn't do this even if you get 20/20 on the timed practice.

I should be over 1500 in 3 days when I reach my 340 day streak :)

No quiero las responsibilidades del dueno de duolingo. Estoy jubilado.

¡Saludos a todos y buena suerte!

Duolingo used to give a ridiculous amount of lingots for translating and then some losers whined that they had too many lingots and duo lingo stopped doing it -_-. I have almost 1200 myself.

I lost my first streak at 30 something days, and I lost it not because I didn't practice, but because I couldn't finish a lesson to get points. I just didn't understand the concept enough. The same thing happened again after 14 days even though I practiced. The reality is my streak should be around 50 days right now, but it isn't due to me not knowing how the streak works. A couple of pointers other people gave me:

  1. Buy a streak freeze - once you buy it, it doesn't get used up right away. It gets used only if you accidentally forget to study one day. I have one loaded right now for streak protection...haha.
  2. You can do the timed lessons to get just 1 point. That will keep your streak alive.

The streak freeze works for 1 day. I am living in Costa Rica and about 4 months ago Duo was inexplicably off for 4 days. When it came back I could see no one else had been affected. It showed me how addicted I am though.

I FEEL for you!!! I have been there and lost a streak at about 30 days. And, I was at the 150-day mark when my power went out unexpectedly. Fortunately, it came back on within a couple of hours. If it happens and I lose it, I'll "dig deep" and start over, but it IS PAINFUL, at first. However, THAT'S what makes us CHAMPIONS. YOU CAN DO IT:--))

I lost my streak about a month into it because I kept failing my lessons. At the time I didn't realize that I had to actually be successful to keep a streak. I do mostly timed practice from work at this point as I'm not yet comfortable with translating. And lingots? I have over 900. My wife, Knoxienne, has nearly 2,000 of them.
