Sounds great :) I would love to take part

(Somebody in the previous thread suggested this already and I would like to second it)

I suggest reading "The Little Prince" because it is a good book and not very difficult. It is also free.

*I'm not sure if that would be how you would say it

Also, sorry for not elaborating more, my French is not the best

You can get the book as a free pdf in both english and french as well as an audio book version on youtube.

I would like to see some rules and more organization though. Like how to suggest a reading, including votes...etc. Current book, timeline, progression, some statistics, link to the current discussion (Preferably in an independant post) in the main thread. In short, the current status of the club for anyone who wants to join in.

Les propositions doivent avoir un certain format pour faciliter la lecture (because right now it's a mess).

This might actually be easier to maintain inside Facebook. Private bookclub group, then you could follow all the people who have joined/active.

I guess I'll simply start suggesting :)

Ich suggest reading "The God of Carnage" (the movie was simply called "Carnage") because it ist written in present tense and full of Dialogues (as it ist a drama). That's why I think this book is easy to read (furthermore play aren't too expensive). Some might even know the movie and therefore the basic plot.

I'm interested. Will the discussions be written or spoken? My French speaking skills are not very good, but I would like to listen to book discussions. I can read and write French if the discussions are written. I would also like to discuss Le Petit Prince. Thank you.

I can only imagine they'll be written, likely in a duolingo forum like this. I live in New Zealand so it'd be difficult to do things live.

I think it would be good to start with the smaller, easier books like Le Petit Prince, but as the group progresses and people start wanting to read longer books, Amazon has many books in French for Kindle, and many of them are free. If you don't actually have a Kindle, you can download a free app for smartphones, tablets or computer desktops (Mac or PC). I've already collected a bunch of books to keep me motivated - one day I will actually be able to read them... :-) Some of them are way beyond my current level, like Notre Dame de Paris, but there are also French translations of books for younger audiences, like Alice in Wonderland and Tom Sawyer (though I don't know how good the translations are on the free editions). Just a thought, for when everyone is ready to move up to the more challenging, chapter-a-week types of books - it's the easiest and cheapest way I've found to access French books from anywhere.

PS - sorry, I couldn't make the link work for the free apps...I'll keep trying if anyone is interested :-)

I will join the club. Le petit Prince is not bad for starters, however a chapter a week would be too few. Most of the chapters are really short.

An alternative might be 'Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran'.

I'm interested, but due to time commitments I might not be able to until early next year. If you are starting with Le Petit Prince then I'll give it a try (since I already have the pdf), and if I can't keep up I'll just drop out; maybe I can rejoin later when you start the second or third book? :-)

Michel Tournier.

I'd to read the graphic novel called Persepolis. It's original in french and it's easy to find translated to English as well. It has really good reviews. I think it would be a great start, since it's not a children's book but the images will definitely help to get the context of the story.

Here are a few recommendations:

Les petits garçons naissent aussi des étoiles, by E. Dongala - a very good story about a little boy growing up in Africa whose father is a math professor. It's a little long, but not very difficult (paperback only)

Une femme, by Annie Ernaux - Ernaux is a well-known author in France, known for semi-autobiographical works. This one is about her mother and it's pretty sad, but easy and not very long (paperback only)

L'incroyable Miss Pilkinson ! Panique à Oxford Street, by Sam Spiegel - a children's book about an old English lady who is a witch and her French nephew who comes to visit her. It's pretty entertaining and not too long (available on kindle)

Tartuffe by Molière - this is a play and it is a little more difficult, but very famous and very funny for those who are willing to work a little harder. Molière's complete works are available for free on kindle.

This comment has nothing to do with the book club...hlenmk, I am in awe of your 356 day streak! Here, have a lingot! I myself am supposed to be at a 58 day streak, but I didn't realize you had to do a lesson in the mobile app at least twice before it counted towards the daily streak. The first lesson of the day (for me) always says, for instance, "You are on a 13 day streak" upon completing the first lesson. THEN it will say "You are on a 14 day streak" when I am done with the second lesson I do for the day. Again, this happens when I use my mobile app to study. I didn't realize it did this until after I lost my streak (it happened upon doing just 1 lesson that 44th day), blah! Anyhoo, I am at a 14 day streak as of 10/14/14 (with 44 days already behind me). My goal was/is to see a 365 day streak...

Thank you so much for your kind comment. I'm very pleased to have reached 365 days, and it's extra special now that you've noticed! I'll have to watch out for when you get there too.
