Grammar Notes for French!

Hi! I'm DXLi, and I'm a contributor and moderator for the French/English Duolingo team.

Our team has been developing grammar notes for the French for English Speakers course. Such notes are a very common request from users, and we're happy to announce that the first batch of notes is ready! To find them, open a skill (e.g. Basics 1) and look below the lessons. Some users may have to press a button on the right side to see them.

As we continue to develop these notes, we'd love any feedback you have on them. Perhaps the notes are too short, too long, missing content, not detailed enough, etc. Keep in mind that we're trying to teach grammar gradually, so not every note will have everything you need to know about a particular subject. Please feel free to comment on this thread with general feedback, but for errors, please contact me directly on my stream.

UPDATE 3/1: Still working on the notes! We're gradually rolling out tree updates to French users, so you should be seeing new notes shortly if not already.

We hope you enjoy your new grammar notes!

That's awesome! I know that a lot of people have been looking for this. Will the notes be appearing on the mobile versions as well?

As far as I know, the mobile versions don't currently support tips and notes. I don't interact with the product team, so I don't know if such a feature will appear in the future. Sorry! You should be able to read them if you log in on a browser, though.

Hopefully we will not have to wait too much longer for the tips on mobile. I think tips and notes are needed more on mobile, since switching pages for grammar guidance using a desktop computer is much easier.

For the present though, I guess I will start using the web browser's interface for lessons.

True that. These notes are really helpful, not to mention clear and concise. I have adopted a strategy of doing my actual learning on the mobile platform, and then breezing through the entire thing on the computer (even if it's at a later date).

The added trouble only because I prefer a non-structured environment, though. I absorb things better while walking around, etc.

And this makes for great XP and Lingots too! ;)

Isn't Duolingo a universal app (i.e. it's the same on both iPhone and iPad)? I've never seen notes in the app.

Yes it is. But there is also an entire desktop version of Duolingo which is admittedly more expansive and in-depth. I would say that mixing mobile and desktop versions is the best way to get the best out of the service.

I saw the grammar notes in basics one. It seems huge to me. Maybe they should be sub-divided, link to different sub-sections, or be automatically collapsed to prevent one from becoming overwhelmed. It seems to me that those notes are likely to scare off some prospective learners with too much information.

Also in the current lessons screen (not the experimental beta), the tips and notes are kicked off to the bottom of the screen. Therefore, a user with a small screen is unlikely to see them. Currently I only see the tips and notes in basics 1, so I'll provide more feedback later.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It's a tough balance, because there's so much to learn in the first few lessons. We may end up shrinking them to the bare minimum and then posting the extended discussion elsewhere, but tables aren't enabled for discussions yet, so we'll have to wait on that.

      Feedback 2:

      Important

      1. Provide definitions for Gramatical terms , for example, Partitive Article, or entirely avoid them.

      2. Emphasis - Tips and notes should probably emphasize the skill they're under. Under food, I'd expect something also related to meals or eating.

      3. Prepositions - I think this is one of the most important skills, and even L1 speakers struggle with it, so I believe it should probably be prioritized.
      4. Permalinks (anchors)* - A way to avoid repetitive descriptions in the forums, or to refer quickly to other descriptions in other sections is to use permalinks/anchors, for example, this & this refer to comments/sections in this page. It can also work for external links.

      Optional

      1. Small cultural notes - for example, diminuitives are used often in Portuguese like Ronaldinho (little ronaldo), and rabinho (small buttox).
      2. Add a horizontal line to split subsections
      3. A picture is worth a thousand words, sometimes it is better to show things rather than explain it.

Anyway, overall the notes are well designed. It just seems that they need to be properly organized and with better spacing between the headings.

Dessamator, you are one of the bright brains in this world. Thank you for input in so many ways - not just here - but on other posts as well. As a programmer in a past life - things all take time. But I 100% agree with you that it is FANTASTIC to include Pictures in learning - as it engages a different part of our brain. As does Sound, as does Listening, as does Smelling (not really replaceable on computer interface), as does Touching (not really replaceable on computer interface), and even more importantly as does Emotion (it can be engaged a computer interface). For us humans often Pictures have a quicker way of engaging our emotions, as well as using a different neural interface to our brains. Typed words though are a quicker interface to get up and going for communications - in a computer environment. (In a restaurant or social situation - hand gestures - and figure drawing on a note pad are fantastic ways to communicate all sorts of things ;)

I have been in a bit of a transit zone recently, and I am yet to get up to speed on internet world - but I like what I see and 'comprehend' (hear) here ;)
MOST IMPORTANTLY thank you for the efforts of the team behind the scene - to improving human learning :)

Smelling (not really replaceable on computer interface)

Actually it is, though it is still in the prototype stage. The same applies to touching, called haptic feedback.

With animated svg or even webp it may be possible to generate various animated images to help people learn, without consuming a lot of bandwith.

Anyway, thank you for your kind words. You're also helping people with your French notes. :)

Feedback 3: This information should be accessible on the Duolingo iPhone app as well. In addition, suggest to have a basics page on some theory as applicable before going into testing out lessons. For example, I've gone through French till Food and Animals (on mobile) and have not yet seen a comprehensive Je suis, Tu es... Ils sont yet. Similarly for As-tu, although they have been included in pronunciation exercises.

        https://www.duolingo.com/Dessamator

Do you really cover all that in just 4 basic lessons?

Anyway, it may not be a big problem because people actually have to click to see the tips and notes. So those who aren't interested may end up ignoring it anyway. I think it would also be fruitful if you provide references for the grammar notes. From what I've seen in sentence discussions, people have real fights over even the simplest concepts.

At one point I recall two users arguing over the use of a semi-colon in an immersion document. Others were arguing over something that wasn't really up to discussion (whom vs who) in a lesson. Some things are iron-clad and should be referenced (preferably reputable sourceS) while those that are open to interpretation should be left as such, in my opinion.

Dessamator, this is the first thing you've said (that I know about) that I genuinely disagree with. So called "language rules" and standard "grammar books" and "properly referenced" usages, as well as dictionaries themselves, are nothing more than records or descriptions of how language is used by people. Lewis Carroll had it right when he had Tweedledum (or Tweedledee?) declare that what he meant was simply a matter of "Who's master here?" The answer is, of course, the user, the populace; they are the final arbiters of how any language is used, regardless of what any book may say.

Language is of course stratified; it is often a marker of social or educational class, and what people have learned in school as "correct" will sometimes provoke fierce defenses of their status against interlopers who speak differently. But how people ultimately speak, or write, is going to be in the heads of those who do it. Duo's "method," if it can be called that, is firmly based in this truth. "Crowd sourcing" depends on the numbers of people who use language in some particular way. Appeal to "standard" usages is in the final analysis irrelevant. It solves no problems. It merely says that "a lot of people do it differently." But "who's master"? The ones who use the language that survives. We may never know.

Duo's "trial and error" procedure is close to the way we all learn our native languages. We speak in the way we have learned from our parents and peers, after listening, reading, trying, failing, trying again. As adults, we are less patient. We've been there done that, and want quicker certainty this time around. But repetition is what produces fluency; when something "just sounds right" it has become the way we think, and not until then have we mastered the language. At that point "rules" may become helpful, but the final rule will always be "That's the way I have always heard it and said it."

I am ambivalent about the new "grammar notes." They may help reduce the stress of trial and error learning, but they may actually impede the progress toward fluency. We'll see, won't we?

What you say about language rules is true for English, but it's much less true for regulated languages like French. People may use French however they wish, but official grammar rules (promulgated by the French Academy) do exist. This course is designed to teach proper French writing technique in the Parisian style, so the Academy's rules are canonical. Sure, the Academy created their rules by standardizing the vox populi in 1635, but there is a master here. Or rather, forty masters.

As far as Duo's method goes, apart from Immersion, I don't think Duo uses much crowdsourcing at all. Translations need to be manually entered. Moderators come up with the sentences. Sure, we receive reports about missing translations, but they still need to be vetted and entered by the staff.

I keep seeing people post that Duo's method is similar to how a child acquires language through trial-and-error and immersive feedback, but I wholeheartedly disagree that this is the case. When you learn a language on Duo, it's not the same as learning it organically like a child. There are a ton of differences, but the most important is that Duo presumes that you already understand a language and can build from that.

This means that Duo begins by teaching you a small chunk of grammar and vocabulary and making sure you know it well. Then, it adds another chunk, and another. This is serial learning, and this is why lessons are grouped by grammatical concept.

When children learn a language, they don't acquire it serially. Parents definitely don't start out by reciting pronoun and article tables to their infants. They learn in parallel, refining gradually. Mistakes are ignored as long as the content is correct. Studies have shown that parents tend to avoid correcting grammar until children are well past the initial stages of language acquisition.

When you learn on Duo, you're not going back to square one. You're just creating a bridge between your native tongue and another. If you subscribe to Noam Chomsky's idea of universal grammar, then you'd say that you're just learning the adjustments to the principles and parameters.

And thank goodness for that! I don't know about anyone else, but it took me at least ten years just to become fluent (even without proper grammar) in English. Learning like a child can be painfully slow. That being said, it's also painful to try to learn another language by committing grammars to memory without functional use of the language. The Duo technique is somewhere in the middle. You learn by trial-and-error, but you can use everything you've already learned to help.

          September 16, 2014

          https://www.duolingo.com/rljones

I didn't realize that there were forty of you folk "playng God" over the current state of the language. The influence of the Academy has diminished somewhat. In fact, people in Provence seem to take great pride in preserving local speech. There are also Canadian "rules" that do not always agree with the edicts from Paris. And some Louisiana Cajuns still insist that "Laissez les bon temps roulez" is good French. Whatever.

I do not subscribe to Chomsky's notion of "universal grammar,." but even if I did it would mean that chlldren ALREADY have an "existing" language and "can build from that," as you assert Duo's strategy relies on. What children have is a logical relationship to the world, and they learn how their own culture refers to it in language. In Duo, adults learn that there are different ways of referring to the same reality that all of us share. That is important to know.

And I have gratitude and great admiration for those of you who make this possible. You are absolutely right that learning any language takes time, and there's not much way to speed up the process. However long it takes parents to begin correcting their kids' language, they learn primarily from their peers, who are less forgiving. They learn to "fit in," even including the "right" accent. May Duo's accent always be "right."

I agree with you about Duo´s method.I graduated in english translation.According to David Nunan´s book vocabulary is more than lists of target language words. As part of the language system, vocabulary is intimately interrelated with grammar. In fact,it is possible to divide the lexical system of most languages into grammatical words such as preposition, articles, adverbs, and so on and content words.the grammaticality of vocabulary also manifests itself in word morphology, that is ,the grammatical particles that we attach to the beginning and ends of words in order to form new words.the following task is designed to focus learners on this aspect of language.I learned Spanish here and I can speak it well,I should say that I really like this language;it is so sweet for me,but Duolingo helps me a lot(Mil Gracias Duo)!!!!

          September 26, 2014

          https://www.duolingo.com/Dessamator

Well, perhaps you misunderstood. I didn't mean that Duolingo wouldn't add any new suggestions or change things as necessary. Any course (language based or not) should be fluid and change with the times. But sometimes people argue over simple things that are used by the majority of people. It would also be a problem to randomly accept the words of all dialects.

Can you imagine reading a text that uses many dialects?:

"The trunk that was near the tree was closed but the boot kept opening over and over again, suddenly my pants fell, so I needed to pull my pants up and wear my pants thereafter, so I could quickly catch a lift on my lift to my apartment"

I encourage you to decipher that :).

Allowing a course to grow is fine. But there has to be a point where one simply needs to take sides, otherwise future moderators will have a hard time maintaining the course. If all current staff and contributors choose to leave there must be a template future contributors can follow to improve and maintain the course. That is in my opinion, simply a necessary evil.

In any event, those are simply "tips and notes", a tip or a note is something that by definition can be simply ignored anyway.

P.S. It is good to disagree sometimes, it encourages discussion and creativity. :)

          https://www.duolingo.com/Dessamator

          @rljones:

We can certainly agree that the OED is a good document to reference from, and that historical differences are particularly important when maintaining a language course.

As for my Dialectical challenge, you got most of it right, the original story was this:

"The rear compartment of the car which was near the tree was closed, but it kept bouncing open, and the distressed driver's underwear fell with all that commotion, so he really pulled up his underwear, then pulled up his trousers, and grabbed a ride on the elevator to his apartment".

          Possibly to call for help.

I played on the fact that the British and the Americans can't seem to agree on what pants means, so pants referred to both the underwear in British English and trousers in American English. I also played around with the word trunk, boot, and tree.

P.S. You actually added fun facts to the story that weren't there, so I just stuck with it. It wasn't a crash originally, the car was simply near a tree but I like your version better.

          September 16, 2014

          https://www.duolingo.com/rljones

I had not realized before that your dialect was British. Stupid me; all the markers are there. I will refer you to the OED, the greatest dictionary in the world, and its insistent historical focus. Language changes, not just courses in language or anything else, and the entire gamut of usages is spread out in the OED for examination. That, to my mind, is "properly referenced."

Thanks for your little dialectical challenge. i assume it refers to a car crash in which the hood of the car, near the tree, was shut, but the rear compartment was bouncing open, and the driver, who was in some distress, realized that he was at fault and had to "man-up" and grab a ride on the elevator to his apartment (presumably to call for assistance?) Anywhere close? Correction requested. "Tips and notes" and all that.

No matter what you do you will not eliminate squabbles over grammar. A review article writer on English grammar books wrote recently that, only religion aroused the same degree of emotion and hostility. Apparently egos flare when it comes to English grammar. LOL. Hardly. I didn't realise review writers were so hysterical! I've not read of one massacre which has started because of a disagreement over grammar. Could be interesting though.

"Cambridge students slaughter visiting Harvard students over blatant misuse of Queen's English"

          August 19, 2014

          https://www.duolingo.com/Dessamator

I don't think that is a problem. But if Duolingo justifies their sentences and translations by referencing a grammar book then it will reduce it to an extent.

It is something like saying, "we know there are different ways interpreting grammar, but we are generally following this book". The bonus is that grammar 'lovers' can always buy the book and/or use it to expand their knowledge.

I would personally never waste my time arguing over something that is properly referenced, especially if many sources say the same thing, and it is not my field of expertise. But as you say, each person reacts differently to grammar.

          August 16, 2014

          https://www.duolingo.com/jeanprendiville

Ah but the question is "what is properly referenced?". You give me The Chicago Book of Style and I will give you Fowler and on and on. So along with general rules, a deal of tolerance and humility is required.

          August 16, 2014

          https://www.duolingo.com/Dessamator

Not really, there are some iron-clad Language rules, that relate to all forms of a language.

I think you're confusing learning with general discussion. In learning a language you follow its documented rules, regardless of the general opinions of the populous. That is at least in written form, spoken form is chaotic at best.

Referencing styles are dependent on preference, not any steadfast rules.

I notice that you say the tips and notes are at the bottom of your screen.

In my account (using a PC) I have to click a little button in the top-right corner to get the tips and notes up.

This was not always the case however. There used to be Spanish notes below the lessons, but it changed a few weeks ago, and now you have to click the little button in the top-right corner. I do not like this nearly as much as being able to scrol down. Partly because it's harder to read them over the gold background as opposed to the white, and also the pop-up box is only half the screen.

Anyway, I also notice that you say that there is an experimental beta. What is that? I have not heard of it.

If this is the reason for the difference, how do I revert to the old look, as it sounds like you have done?

You can't revert back because Duolingo is testing it out to see if it is better or not.

Ah I see, thank you for that.

Hmmm, well if I can't revert, are they going to ask us to give feedback?

Personally I think the old version was better, but it seems most people in the discussion you linked prefered the new one.

Either way, it's not the end of the world!

No, they rarely ask for any feedback. They generally evaluate usage metrics based on lesson success and such, and decide based on that. I suppose they probably also monitor the forums and review their emails for any feedback users "wish" to send them.

            https://www.duolingo.com/GregHullender

Let me suggest that you add a note at the top of the lessons to this effect: "If Duolingo makes language study into a game, you can think of grammar rules as a form of 'game guide.' You should try the lesson a few times, and then read the grammar rules. Reading the rules cold is boring and overwhelming, but if you wait until you've tried a few lessons, the rules will seem helpful and clear."

I know there's already a mild note to that effect, but (to me) it still implies that a "good" user would read all the rules first and then do the lessons, and that it's tolerable if you don't. Instead, I think it should make it clear that, unless you have already studied French and want a refresher, you should not look at the rules until after you've tried a lesson or two. (That's why I like the game-guide analogy; you only look at the game guide when either a) you get stuck or b) you've finished but want to know if you missed anything.)

Many, many people say that they lost interest in languages when they were asked to memorize tables of rules. I think Duolingo has gone too far in avoiding rules (and I applaud the great work you guys have done here) but I want to be sure you don't recreate the original problem.

Hi Greg, thanks for the valuable input! I wish we had more flexibility in what we could do with the notes, but unfortunately, Duolingo doesn't have a lot of features in that department. I do really like the idea of suggesting that users try the lesson a few times and only refer to the notes if they run into trouble. I'll see about implementing that.

EDIT: The new text I'll be putting up is:

Grammar notes like those below can be helpful if you're having trouble with the lessons, so consider trying the lessons above before reading the notes. They'll be more helpful once you have a context for understanding them.

              August 26, 2014

              https://www.duolingo.com/Dessamator

Excellent. I also think you should only include the themes covered in the particular lessons. Especially in basics 1 and 2. For example, I see that you talk about contractions in Basics 1, but unless I'm mistaken none of the sentences there use a contraction. You also expose the pronunciation of H, which really doesn't differ much from English, and is unnecessary at that point, maybe later.

Plurals are described in basics 2, and in the Plurals skill there seems to be more about punctuation. L' amour is discussed in basics 2 yet there is a whole skill for feelings, that should probably go into the flirting skill, or feelings.

More importantly those tables although informative are huge. Especially considering they aren't collapsible. I understand that contributors want to decrease FAQs based on their experience with the incubator and the sentence discussion.

However, in doing so, you're simply exposing information the learner doesn't need to know at that time.

              August 26, 2014

              https://www.duolingo.com/DXLi
              Mod

Thanks again for the feedback. The notes are indeed designed to include as little as possible while covering the grammar introduced in each section. However, there are times when we introduce extra grammar because it fits well with existing grammar.

For instance, we introduce contractions with elisions because they're very similar. And since we introduce elisions, we must introduce the idea of the mute H, because an English-speaker would see an elision before an H and wonder how it could be a vowel.

I'm not sure what you mean about punctuation in Basics 2. Do you mean conjugations? If so, that's intentional, and meant to show that verb conjugations have plural inflections. As for the "L'amour" section, I put it there because that's where aimer first appears, and it's really important to know that aimer only means "to love" for animate things. Even though that has to do with feelings, the verb aimer appears all over the place, and pushing that note down the tree would result in a ton of confusingly lost hearts.

I agree with you that the tables can be a bit bulky, but I've tried putting that information in both list and prose form, and the consensus has been that it's way less accessible in those forms.

                August 26, 2014

                https://www.duolingo.com/Dessamator

I meant that you discuss Punctuations in the PLURAL skill, while in the Basics 2 skill you also cover plurals. Though it makes sense at that point. I think the Basics 2 table is kind of confusing. It shows both singular forms and plural, and the point you're trying to get across there isn't clear. Are you teaching how to conjugate or are you showing the differences?

I see what you mean about l' amour, your explanation makes sense. The only thing that is kind of complicated is that agreement section, Portuguese is my L1, so I understand it perfectly. But I imagine that anyone who doesn't understand genders will be very confused.

I suggest you underline or highlight the differences, e.g.:

Masculine singular: Le chat noir — The black cat
Masculine plural: Les chats noirs — The black cats

                https://www.duolingo.com/Dessamator

Interesting analogy, some people just throw out the manual in most cases, and some don't even know it exists. I think it would be better if the hints and notes were automatically hidden for basics 1 and 2, and once a user fails something like 3 or 4 times they automatically magically appear.

Something like the old dos adventure games that gave you hints if you lost enough times, but never revealed too much in the beginning.

                August 26, 2014

                https://www.duolingo.com/GregHullender

Not the manual; the game guide. It's a book that you pay extra to buy. It does not come with the game. The one for Skyrim costs $27 and is almost 900 pages long. (As big as a reference grammar.) :-)

A game guide always contains walk throughs for the different adventures plus tables of information about different aspects of the game, together with rules to follow to get better results. Anyone who plays games should understand the analogy. With a game, it's a form of cheating to read the game guide before playing, and it spoils your enjoyment of the game. For language learning, it's not cheating, but it can definitely spoil the enjoyment.

Again, not everyone feels that way. A linguist will always want to read that stuff. Someone who already studied the language will appreciate the reminder. Someone who already knows a related language will find it fairly easy as well. But young people approaching their first foreign language will definitely do better to wait. The time to explain grammar to a young person is at the point where he/she is begging to see it.

Maybe you're right about the old DOS adventure games. "I'm prepared to give you a hint, but it will cost you 5 lingots. Do you still want the hint?" (I'm not sure chaging makes sense, though.)

To really make that work, I think you'd want a per-question option of the form "I don't understand why my answer was wrong" that would direct you to a section of the grammar rules that explained it. That'd be a tall order to implement, since there are far, far more ways to give a wrong answer than to give a correct one.

Of course, again, it would be nice if Duolingo offered separate reporting options for "I'm sure my answer is correct" (i.e. Duo has an error) and "I don't understand why my answer is wrong" (i.e. I need someone to teach me something).

                August 26, 2014

                https://www.duolingo.com/Dessamator

It makes sense, the grammar is definitely cheating from that perspective because it gives you solutions for things you'd learn intuitively.

Maybe you're right about the old DOS adventure games. "I'm prepared to give you a hint, but it will cost you 5 lingots. Do you still want the hint?" (I'm not sure charging makes sense, though.)

Now that is a novel idea. Gamification of grammar instructions. That would essentially kill two birds with one stone, and would require one to complete a lesson with full hearts. An alternative is a big bonus skill for grammar lover such as linguists. Although, like you said, it may be difficult to implement.

But who knows maybe Duolingo will be able to pull it off.

                August 26, 2014

                https://www.duolingo.com/GregHullender

How about a game where you can see other people's mistakes for a sentence and map them to grammar rules. You win a "grammar point" when that person confirms that they understand. Then when anyone else inputs that sentence, they automatically get referred to that rule.

If you have a high enough grammar score, it puts "Master" in front of your name. :-)

                August 26, 2014

                https://www.duolingo.com/Dessamator

So basically what we do in immersion but explained with grammar?

I think this could work just as well as immersion does, but it would be better if they provide a layman's explanation, and map that explanation to the grammar rule.

Of course the problem is whether people would really enjoy searching for grammar rules and providing explanations. What would be the benefit to the explainer aside from "Grammar nazi" status? :)

Furthermore, a simple survey of immersion would indicate that most people can't be bothered to do that even to resolve " edit-wars".

                August 26, 2014

                https://www.duolingo.com/GregHullender

My thinking is that the moderators would leverage the results. So an edit war would end when a moderator (or a "master") marked one answer correct. Simply letting people vote for the ones they liked could also work, if the system applied that forward. That is, if you liked my very-linguistic explanations in the first ten lessons, then my explanations for future lessons will be shown to you before anyone else's. But if Jane hates my explanations, then she won't see them at all in the future. More sophisticated is to determine that because you like my explanations, you'll like Jack's explanations too. This isn't rocket science to do, given enough data, but it's fairly advanced nevertheless.

                August 26, 2014

                https://www.duolingo.com/Dessamator

I see, that is basically a recommending system. I think that if it were coupled with something like Duolingo's progress quiz or Duolingo's aptitute test it could potentially yield very good results.

The thing is that they already have this data from "millions of reports". So one other option would be to subtly introduce users reports to other users as a multiple choice question within the lessons themselves. That would effectively create a hidden master ranking, and allocate more weight to their reports who could then add the applicable grammar rule to it.

I know there is the theory that users shouldn't be shown wrong sentences because they may learn it incorrectly, but I think if a user is advanced /proficient enough it wouldn't matter.

Re AUDIO: When might you will be adding the 'click to hear an audio file'? This is EVER so important - as most people - initially - and probably fundamentally - want to be able to communicate by speaking and hearing what other people say. And THAT is one of the great gifts the internet has over a printed book - so flaunt it. ;) (of course in all the best taste ;) I like that in the " PHRASES Tips and Notes " you have included some " Romaji "(how to pronounce words using simple roman script). This does really help people also. I do hope that you though add in as soon as possible that you can click on all the french words and hear an audio file. It is great work that you are doing. Thank you again.

As far as the sound goes,we explored this option, but we seem to have no way of playing sound files using links or anything like that. The formatting limitations for the tips & notes really limits what we can do.

I agree with you that having some basic sound files for French phonemes is critical, and we're looking into alternative solutions. Perhaps we'll just have to link to some other page. If you have any ideas, please let me know! =)

                  https://www.duolingo.com/daKanga

Having audio is a very big issue in learning to communicate in a language. I think your idea of having a 'standard' « French phonemes » - in text - is a great idea. And also that the symbols for what sounds these « French phonemes » indicate should ideally be based on the standard roman/latin alphabet. The main exception to this is :
The accents used with the letter e. This is the accents use with the e does indicate a change in sound. Being:
                  - * l'accent aigu (m) : é , as in le café , and is often described as an « ay » sound.
                  -
                  l'accent grave (m) : è , like « eh » , as in le procès
                  - while e, makes a sound « euh » type sound
                  -
                  la cédille :ç ,makes a « s » as in le façade
                  -
la ligature : œ , as in un œil , le bœuf
                  - And also ë , ï , ü and ÿ , where
le tréma* indicates in french there are two vowel sounds said one after the other. (ie such as for Noël
I would suggest using these standard french accent words - especially when they also appear in the french word - as this also assists learning to read french and pronounce the words.
In my research to date, all the other use of accents helps with identifying the meaning of the word, or have historical contexts - and the other accents marks used do not indicate a change in how a letter is said.
And of course to clearly state that the pronunciation is based on the 'official' Parisian pronunciation.
It would also be GREAT to develop an 'activity' that worked through these sounds - helping people read and say the standard phonetic sounds in french.
Of course you then go on to the unique nasal and guttural sounds - not in English, and the rolling/guttural sound of the r.

Another advantage of developing a standardized and simplified « French phonemes » is that this also is a great tool to boost learning. As sound information is presented also in a written form, not just in an audio form. I would of course LOVE to also see where you could click on words and hear audio. But one must work with what can be achieved, within resources available. And working just in text is a constraint that can have advantages if it enables these textual clues and supports to be developed.
                  :)

The most difficult for me is spelling, because English, French and Spanish have doubles, like mm, ll, pp, and so on... My mother tongue is Slovenian has generally no doubles, and you write down all the vowels and consonants just the way you hear them, no one is mute, like in English. Nobody would ask you, how to spell, except for foreigners and those who have some speech defect.

try to divide information up in small bits, with an example after each bit. For example, in the notes for using liaisons, the note refers to nasal sound, but then makes exceptions for en un on. A better way would be to say in the note: " Liaisons are used nasal sounds like " (insert best example)" The exceptions un on en, (insert another example for this). Also, in teaching the sounds of things an added feature of clicking an aural example would be very helpful. that said, I am delighted with the addition of this feature, and all your work and contributions. Many says that these notes looks huge and would scare off beginners. But I feel it is fine when reviewing the material after passing the first checkpoint. Grammar notes are really helpful but in my view should be kept locked to beginners until they reach some checkpoints. It is much easier for beginners to feel the grammar than read it.

I think the lack of grammar notes was one of my biggest complaints. Often it wasn't addressed in the comments section, and you can find plenty of examples where someone has asked a reasonable question which has remained unanswered.

Having notes at the start may reduce some of the bulk of questions in the discussions, too (I'm thinking of ones I see regularly like "how do I know if it's C'est or Il est????)

Based on my recollections of having to search elsewhere for information, may I offer the following comments from the Basics 1 notes?

*"All nouns have a gender that you must memorize." This is a difficult concept for some English native speakers....... Can you point out that these are called articles? That is, point out that the gender correlates with a corresponding article. On reading this paragraph, I found myself thinking so if "une apple" is feminine, how do I know that? What tells us that "une apple" is feminine? And then I wondered how do I know what the male equivalent of that is?

*Can you add a quick explanation of countable / uncountable nouns? From discussions, there seems to be a lot of confusion over these.

*"Verbs in French conjugate to different forms to agree with the subject of the sentence. " If you don't know what conjugate means, you might look it up, to be told "give different forms of a verb". The sentence is then understood (or not) as "Verbs in French give different verb forms to different forms....."

Perhaps you could simply say "Verbs in French conjugate (adopt different forms) to agree.... etc.

Also, what about defining subject? From discussions, this too causes initial confusion. I suspect a lot of native English speakers can speak English fluently and correctly, but would give you a blank stare if you asked them who or what the subject of the sentence was, and you need to know this to conjugate the correct verb form.

Eg. The apple is bad. The apples are bad.

If presented with a verb conjugation chart, I am given options for je / tu / il / nous / vous / ils (I, you, he, we, you, they). How do I know which conjugation to use if I don't know what a subject is?

I think having access to the notes before you begin a lesson is good. I'd have liked to read them (even if they didn't make much sense) before starting a lesson, even if to give me a sense of what I'd be learning!

Within Count Noun, Mass Noun, or Both; I was hoping to find an explanation as to why des is translated to some and other times it is ignored.

I would also suggest, perhaps within basics 1, an alphabet phonics option. Being able to correctly pronounce the basic sounds will allow to speak properly. As I teach my babies to talk, they first practice sounds, then words. French is new to me as is any language to a baby.

Des can be translated to "some" or omitted because that's a flexibility we have in English. French doesn't have that flexibility.

As far as phonetic tables go, there are a few in the bonus skills, but we don't have a great way of linking actual sound recordings, and text-based phonetic explanations only go so far. I'd highly recommend seeking out other sources for that, like videos on YouTube or audio courses like Michel Thomas'.

Just one suggestion: If the site could create a tips/notes section for each language, it would be a lot better. It's annoying to have us clicking into different lessons just to read the tips. (I know it's not up to you guys, but let's hope that duo will introduce the function soon.)

We've discussed this option, and I'm not sure if it will be implemented. I like the idea, but there currently isn't really any place on Duo that would be suitable for it. After all, Duo's generally designed to avoid extensive grammar discussions. If you're interested in reinforcing grammar specifically, I'd recommend getting a proper French grammar and going through it.

That being said, maybe I can post them somewhere else in a commingled form once they're all done. I'll keep that in mind. Thanks for your input!

I think a better idea is that once the grammar tips are all compiled, it could be uploaded to immersion. That way you can have access to permalinks(anchors) since each sentence is itself a permalink, and this would be perfect to refer students in discussions.

For example, if I want to refer to a particular part of the ICG, I'd simply use line 3. This is a very efficient way to refer to just about anything in those guidelines, and would be a perfect way to stop repeating the same answers in sentence discussions. :)

Great work DXLi. I think the early descriptions are a bit too long and overwhelming for a new user. Though no one is forced to use them, which makes that OK. I would really like to see more of those little blurbs of grammatical information that you see when you encounter a new concept for the first time in early lessons. Can more be done on your end to add such things? They are extremely lacking in lessons past the first checkpoint.

I just wanted express how glad I came to the discussion room and saw that these tips existed! Recently ma soeur et moi, were discussing what was missing on DUO, and I have gotten soooo much from the site, it was hard for me to really criticize...but finally I settled on the fact that each lesson was not really explained very well anywhere. I just sort of launched or have always launched into each lesson and figured it out as I go through it. I use DUO on a small netbook, and I honestly didn't know that those tips were down there, until I read through DXLi's and Dessamator and some other's posts below, that these great grammer tips where there, because they weren't shown on the screen, where I could see them. SO...now I have gone and checked them out and it makes me want to go back and start from the very beginning, reading the tips as I redo each lesson, and see if these make a difference in how I am learning. My feedback is that depending on what a person is using to view the info on DUO, he/she may not ever even know those great tips are there...and perhaps there could be some sort of 'roadsign' above that lets he/she user know that these are below, and to go down and at least look for them. I think something like that was mentioned by Dessamator below, and I think it would really help if there was a note at the top, telling one to look below...so they dont get missed. (longest run-on ever)

On an unrelated note, I would love to see DUO have a way to skype and have discussions areas for people who want to talk to other speakers who want to learn the converse language. Something like...English speakers who want to speak French, practicing with French speakers who want to speak better English.

Thanks for all you guys are doing with the fantastic site. I really do love it.

Partitives, articles, definite articles, etc.? -- talk ENGLISH! Only English majors would know what you're talking about! Drop the grammar lingo and speak on a common man's level. Or just forget the notes altogether, because they don't mean anything to us if we can't understand them.

I have been studying french for decades (slow learner, I guess). I have never had an explanation for where an adjective is placed and why. It finally makes sense.

I'm enjoying all the notes and tips. They're clear and informative.

I'm a Sri Lankan, currently living and working in Muscat, Oman. The other day i met a lady at a shop and learned that she was from Morocco and speaks French. Even though i am still in my beginner stages in the lessons I thought I'd give a try and speak to her in French. The lady was impressed. I obviously struggled for words and put in English words as fill-ins. The overall conversation went well. I'm now motivated and driven to learn this language to the extent i could communicate, read and understand fluently. Thanks to Duolingo Team!

The grammar notes for this section ("plurals") are sorely lacking. The topic itself is quite simple but there are new grammar structures which have yet to be addressed in the grammar notes. What about including some information on asking questions in the Manges-tu format, also about fixing the "English translation" for sentences using the "of" property of des because it makes almost zero sense to say it that way in English. Please give grammar explanations because without them, there is not enough context to guess the "correct" answer except by memorizing the individual awkward answers that are permissible, and checking the comments for any scrap of advice.

Excellent. I find your course very easy to follow and it progresses naturally. I do notice occasionally that you put in something that has not been revealed at that point. For example "votre" was used as a correct alternative in the exercise for singular possessive pronouns. It could be a deliberate ploy. Overall: Excellent. Thanks so much.

It would be good if there was a whole grammar notes section just like the words page, so I do not have to go to each lesson to read up on notes. Or something like https://www.duolingo.com/comment/4614759 but a little more detailed like the notes under the lesson

The team has discussed this idea, and while I'm in favor of such a feature, we don't have any plans to implement it. However, once the grammar notes are done, maybe we'll find a way to post it somewhere for easy reading.

Am I missing something?

Hi DXLi, thanks so much to you and the team for the grammar notes (very concise and right on point). As I am sure others have pointed out:

                              • Please add grammar notes to the skills later in the tree.
                              • These forums need pagination - this thread is too long and can slow down Firefox (also, over 2MB of js and almost 1MB of css?).

Mostly wanted to say thanks and you have the balance just right - there is plenty of material on the web that is more detailed and we don't need that here, IMO. A concise and accurate companion to the skill is parfait.

Please have always the french article with the noun. It would be so easy to remember easier if we always see and hear the article with nouns. Even when pairing up....,

                                https://www.duolingo.com/Eey91

Hello I want to say something since this is something "BIG"!!

When I first started my french tree from Spanish (it was still in beta) there was not much explanations about the exercises and I noticed some other courses (mainly for English speakers) had this tips and tricks sections and I thought that was fantastic. This is information is necessary if you really are into learning any language and I'm sure I'm not the only one who used different resources to study these things. But:

Even though these are simple and basic rules, it is pure grammar. After being here on DL for a few months I think I understood why teaching pure grammar is not one of the main goals of this platform, the immersive type of teaching really works and some may consider it more "friendly".

At first, it looks like "too much" information. I'm aware that it is very complex to divide each explanation for each individual lesson and it is better to have all the info, but going this direction could detract from this immersive factor that, I'm sure, fits better most people.

Don't get me wrong, I totally love this because this way you can now really learn the language. I took a look at every lesson and even learned some interesting things doing a quick read. The info is better organized that some pretty good sources I've found (and it makes sense because it is focused on this specific course).

What I suggest is that this info is not given before starting the skills but after finishing them, like a review for a better understanding of what you just learned with the exercises. This way it can be an option for people to choose whether or not they want to study this because I agree that many info can scare you before even starting. I believe the lessons are progressive enough to be able to understand most of it using the current basic resources, translations and discussion section.

I'm sure not that much info would be needed as you progress in the lessons because starting is the most difficult but if you carry this up to the top of the tree many holes in comprehension would be filled and you would have a much better level at the language when you finish your tree.

Thanks for taking this step, I'm sure it is in the right direction and be sure I'll follow updates. =)

                                https://www.duolingo.com/flint72

Ah here, giving the information after having done the lesson would be the most fustrating thing in the world! If one spent a large amount of time trying to figure out some rule, such as why it is 'au/ al' instead of 'a le/ a el", only to have it pop-up in a handy explaniation at the end, when you would have been delighted with having it before begining, you'd go mad!

I completely see where you are coming from, but I do not think that your proposed solution is a good one. Perpahs a better solution would be to have the tips and notes as is, but make it clear to people that it is only semi-optional extra information, and that they do not 'need' to read it all in advance of the lesson.

That way, people would be able to make the option of 'text-book' style learning, or 'immersion' style learning, as it suits them individually.

                                https://www.duolingo.com/Eey91

I get your point but I'm sure you won't be "lost" without this information, at least up until now the course has been pretty good as it is. Resources as the discussion section helps clearing up most of the questions you have and the time you spend trying to figure out what something means is the time it takes to read comments and answers here, and I personally believe making mistakes is important in a learning process.

Either way this is a personal point of view and a suggestion, not really a solution since I don't think this is a problem.

For a beginner this seems overwhelming. I would have more examples and have more subdivisions. Jumping right into conjugations and THEN talking about exemptions just confuses the student more.

I don't agree. Some of us need more information, rather than less. We all learn differently. I'd rather get conjugations throughout, as this is the way people communicate, using full sentences, which necessitates verb usage and conjugation, in many tenses.

LesJohn, I agree with you that we all learn differently, and also we also learn differently ourselves at different times of our learning journey. No one reference will provide you with the knowledge needed to learn a language. These brief Grammar notes are fantastic, and they give me new insights. However I would like to see a plethora of "sensai" explanations, of different people with the ability to explain things in different ways. These official notes - I believe are fantastic if they are very short - and just highlight some important points and insights that may assist you in passing that "skill".
For more specific questions and information, that cover all sorts of interesting queries and insights - people get to ask them within the sentence comment section itself.
They do not need to be masters already of the language (as I, for example am not), but that can provide explanations that make sense to others. And to be in an environment - such as Duolingo, that if they are not correct - that those with greater mastery can correct and deepen the discussion - for the benefit of that person who explained something, and the benefit of others who read the post.
To this end - I have created my own reference - that I call "my" learning loom . and I actively encourage others to create their own references. And I will also gladly create links to others reference records.
This is one of the great advantages of this new world in its ability to share knowledge.
And this can also be done within the framework of duolingo :)
So if you would like to start also adding to the wealth of learning - also check out here - Duolingo - creating Links, Webs, Mats, looms

And I continue to look forward to our wealth of information expanding. :)

Fantastic implementation. I've gone back through all the lessons to look at the tips and hints. I will say though that the first lesson, all the information can be a bit overwhelming. Might be worth cutting it down, I downloaded the app from Google Play and did the first lesson as a taster, loved it and carried on. I think, personally, if I had read all the hints and tips first, I may have been put off as it is a lot to digest.

I saw the grammar notes. It is really useful for me. While taking the normal duolingo exercises, sometimes I want to spend some time and revise. And having the grammar notes is a good way to remind myself on what I learned. Maybe I'm asking for too much but it would be great if we can have other notes as well, e.g. vocab table. Also, I think the notes will be more useful for people who have completed the course (e.g. Basic 1). Because it is a bit difficult to understand if I haven't taken the course. But anyhow, I love Duolingo, and thank you so much for making this great app :)

                                          1) Thanks VERY MUCH for the new grammar notes and tips. I find them very useful. I started Duolingo French a few months ago as a beginner (now am at Level 8), and I find that having the notes/tips now available has been a great way for me to review the material. The notes also point the way to beginning to generalize about, and to discern rules regarding, grammar and usage. 2) It's hard to say if it is too much to have the notes/tips from the very start. I would say it depends on how much language-learning experience the student has. Probably would have been helpful for me, as I have studied other languages. 3) I loved your example of Napoleon as "un grand homme" and not "un homme grand"! That's the type of example that really helps one to remember the rules, which at times seem to be overwhelming. Thank you all for your good work!

Why is the "s" pronounced in the expression "plus tard"? Why would there be liaison here?

                                          August 26, 2014

                                          Mod

There's no liaison. Liaisons can only occur when an ending consonant is followed by a beginning vowel sound. This is something different entirely. The word plus is special. When it's used to mean "more", then the S is sounded. When it means "less" (e.g. in a negation), then the S is silent.

C'est bizarre, mais c'est la vie!

It would also definitely be helpful if there was a pronounciation guide in the first basic or something early so people can speak better. I'm also hoping for a FAQ's dropdown since there are so many comments on some answers and that dropdown part of the note could answer them.

I hope that a humble "Thank you" is enough for all your hard work. That said, 'thank you', and thank you very much so!

This is really exciting! I am currently taking (again) a beginning French course (which is so far excellent but really easy) and studying an advanced beginner's grammar book. This new feature on Duolingo will give me a reason to use its lessons again and will be another source of practice and learning. Plus, I may now be able to recommend Duo to rank beginners in French. Thank you so much for listening!

It is really great that notes are available for the lessons! The only thing I noticed that could be improved is the formatting of the notes -- it seems that consistently there is not vertical space immediately after unnumbered lists (this can probably be fixed by a simple CSS command). Also, the notes are quite substantial, but the window to read them is very tiny -- it would make sense to show them in a bigger window or even full-screen..

Duolingo is a fab website for learning different languages . The flow of the site should be based on basic tutorials and followed by the tests and rating . Right now , the flow is just like a memory game where in remember the word meaning and get cleared . We dont have any such mechanism of going back and recollecting previous words . Providing basic material and iterative based learning will be great approach i guess !!

                                              >Love is tricky in France. For people and pets, aimer means "to love", but if you add an adverb, like in aimer bien, it means "to like".< Yet, when I redid Basics 2 just now, DL accepted 'We like the cat' as translation for 'Nous aimons le chat'. In general though, these additional grammar notes are ever so welcome and greatly appreciated. My congratulations and thanks to the developers.

In practice, aimer means "to love" for pets only, not for all animals. Since it's ambiguous here whether or not the cat is a pet, both "like" and "love" are accepted.

Thanks for this great notes, they are very useful, specially when you are a beginner like me. Some feedback: - the use of images maybe a very good thing when trying to learn some topics, like the pronouns - adding notes to some bonus skills may not be a good idea, considering that the bonus skills are bonus and a lot of people don't buy them - the possibility to add the same notes when you are learning (i've seen it some times) is very useful. I suppose it's very hard to implement, but if possible, when you have to use it right away in an example it sticks out for a longer time. Thanks again and I hope we can have more notes soon!

We'll get to this soon, I promise! For irregular verbs, there's some information about that in Verbs: Present 2, but we can't put in all the conjugation tables for the smaller groups because it'd take up too much room. Hopefully your students will memorize the patterns after enough practice.

As for passé composé, I'm guessing you mean auxiliary verbs? If that's the case, then être and avoir are auxiliary verbs in present-indicative form that agree with the subject. For instance, il a parlé and ils ont parlé.

"Possessives have different forms that agree with four things: the number of owners, the number of things owned, the gender of the thing owned, and the grammatical person of the owner (e.g. "his" versus "my")."

Are those four factors listed in order of priority?

No, there's no priority or hierarchy involved. None of those four factors can conflict with each other.

In the lesson for adjectives, (in French) the example for Napoleon is exactly vice-versa if I understand the BANGS rule correctly :). I quote the example: "For instance, Napoleon was un grand homme ("a great man"), but not un homme grand ("a tall man")."

That's a reasonable deduction, but grand is just an odd duck. It's a normal BANGS adjective for everything but people. When it modifies people, then it means "important" when it comes before and "tall" when it comes after.

I realy loved the grammar notes. I'd like to ask one thing, maybe it's not the place to ask that, so I beg your forgiven. I like so much this site, but I'd like a French course for portuguese speakers. If some day it will be possible, I would thank you very much.

Your notes are fine. But French grammar... I am a Finnish speaker, and always thought our grammar is complicated. Do not think so anymore. Our grammar is (fairly) systematic (as German grammar is, too). French grammar... Well, it is French grammar. Seems fairly arbitrary to me. A long history, I guess. Then someone just decided to record how people were speaking ( all around the country. And France is a large country.). I think you see my point. Spoken French and French grammar are two different things. I have a feeling, that you are facing the same problem as the Danish are: they do not understand each other anymore. And we, who speak Swedish, do not understand them, anymore, even though the languages are closely related, and reading is easy. Anyway, I do like your style formulated on this course. In spite of some logical confusion to be seen when proceeding the chapters. Thank you, all the best in future!

In my view the more notes the better as the French language is not similar to English at all especial in the way it handles the single vs the plural and the feminine vs the masculine. well done and thank you so much the effective and useful software.

I think it would also help to have a grammar rules practice lesson...some of the special cases like verb conjugations and gender endings could be presented like a game as in the basic lessons. It is particularly difficult to catch the auditory clues of whether it's a singular or plural verb being spoken...this could be made clearer during practice. For example, let us compare the sound of "Vous ētes un Homme" and "Vous et un Homme"

Is there a typo? You say in the paragraphs to use "du" for uncountable things and then say to use it for countable things shortly after: " I like wine, but I am drinking milk. — J'aime le vin, mais je bois DU lait. Both articles are missing in the English version of this example. Aimer expresses fondness for wine, so le vin should be used there. However, boire is not a verb of appreciation, so the PARTITIVE du should be used on the UNCOUNTABLE lait. Cats are animals. — Les chats sont DES animaux. This is a general truth about cats, but #2 above can only apply to subjects, so only chats takes a definite article here. Animaux are COUNTABLE, so use the INDEFINITE." Please tell me it is supposed to say "animaux are uncountable" otherwise I'm really confused and please help!

It's not a typo, because des is actually indefinite in the second example. With a few exceptions, uncountable things are singular, so only du, de la, and de l' are partitive.

If it is pronounced << plews >>, it means 'plus'/ addition. If it is pronounced << plew >> it means 'more'. Of course, both are written as 'plus'. I don't know if Duolingo is correct or not.

Though, what I think would be even more helpful for the Conjugation tables, is to add the definition in English, stating what the verb in question means (its definition), on the Conjugation table itself. Perhaps at the top? I write down new verbs as I go, sometimes the conjugations, so this would be very helpful. Merci beaucoup Duolingo, Je pense votre travail est tres bonne! (hope that's right!)

DX, are we on the same planet? I have "Unfollowed" at the top of this pager, unsuccessfully and now followed your navigation with no success. Where to now? Thanks mate. Frankly, I'd just kind'vr like these mails to my personal email place to stop. Seeing as I'm so stupud and useless, please would you just sort that out? Please?

"Nothing Can Be Done?" There isn't even a "Reply" app at your posts now. So.....Am I getting the message? Honestly, I cannot think of anything better. Thank you so much. This is so good.

No reply place on your post and having tried so hard to get something to happen when I click on your link I do think that is is time to "Call It A Day" mate. It just aint working here. Let it go. Sometimes it just fails. Divorce your name from this failure. It is just "A" failure, not "Your" failure. Nothing worked. I'm unsurprised my friend. Let it go now. I'll just delete stuff immediately it appears. I do wish that I could have filtered this but it is a "Poor Score That Know More". Thanks for trying and please don't try any more. t just doesn't work here. Bless. JJ.

I have actually been trying to describe my confusion - with very bad examples - to a French-speaking friend. This page of information is just what I need. I had a teacher here where I live, but she was constantly jumping around which made it difficult for me to learn French. However, having been exposed to much of this vocab, it makes it more helpful now. It isn't brand new --- the meanings are much more clear because they're in context with the work.

Love "Duolingo" and thanks a bunch.

I find the grammar notes a bit hard to follow but, in saying that, the more I continue with the lessons the more the grammar notes make sense, so for me it is really to practice every day. I am also only just finding my way around the system. I did not realise that there were notes to explain the lessons. Since I have found them the lessons make more sense.

As you said, the grammar notes are hard to follow without some experience, so it's definitely a good idea to keep practicing and working on lessons. It's a kind of synergy. The more you practice, the more the grammar notes make sense, which makes the practice easier, and so on.

I understand that number precedes the noun, but expressions of number are not adjectives to begin with; they are determiners just like "le" and "une". Given that there is a passage on the fact that determiners always precede the noun, why not reduce "BANGS" to "BAGS"?

                                                                                          November 23, 2014

I do agree with you that replacing "numbers" with "determiners" would give a more complete list, but I don't think that "DBAGS" has quite the same ring to it.

It solidifies the exercises and explains areas where I sometimes feel lacking in the rationale. My only suggestion would be to make it easier to move ahead on lessons at my own schedule, rather than not initiating something new only on a daily basis. This assumes I am using the system correctly.

There are other words with which I also have this difficulty. I would like a more emphasized pronunciation of the words and I'd also like a organized list of the words and all their conjugations. Des is listed in the chart there for indirect plurals. I don't recall it being used up to this point so a reminder about it would be helpful for the plural lessons.

In the lesson Basics 1 it says: "Whenever you want to learn a verb's conjugation, hover your mouse over that word and press the "C" button." Is this available in the application as well? Can I pull the conjugation info on my iPad? Thanks!

I came across the phrase "J'aime les femmes." and translated it as "I love the women." Though the program counted it, the correct definition given was "I like women." The notes gave no insight on the le/la/les thing, but in the comments, I discovered that if "the" were implied, de/de la/des would be used. The notes keep referring to everything as "the" (the cat, the dresses) when in fact not meaning THE. Am I wrong, or should this be corrected and users made aware that more than one type of "the" exists in French?

I have been using the mobile version and have been pulling my hair out over some of the finer points of grammar. You have cleared up le/la/ les du/des for me before I went utterly bald!

It teaches the words, but it does not reinforce it with grammar. This would be a great thing to have! I wish it would come to all available formats... (Wink wink...nudge nudge) I think grammar would be also nice being part of tests and questions as well. Sorry if I speak like all of this is just soo easy to do. Anyways, this program is headed in a nice direction! Thanks for everything. I would also like to drop courses too. I opened up a bunch of courses just to look and see what they are like and now they won't go away.

I started using Duolingo on my phone and didn't realise there was a web version with different content and helpful notes for about a month. Until more detailed content is available on the app, is there a way to let new phone-based learners know that there's other resources available online?

Thus, #3 does not apply and viande cannot take a definite article." I understand the point about meat being the direct object of manger. But I do not understand from the grammar notes in this section why viande (something that can be counted as well as considered a "mass noun") cannot take a definite article. Isn't "la" a definite article? Thank you for any clarification you might provide.

I get things wrong, but it helps me to try to think about them again. And I appreciate knowing when I am on the right track :) This is also one of the great things I like about duolingo - is that I can talk to people about things, and get confirmation as to if they are correct - or not. And have things explained in different ways - as some ways make more sense to me than other ways.

Knowing this would also help with the spelling. Including pronunciation of examples would also be greatly beneficial. Thanks

Maybe a new lesson style from the Duo product team could create a new type of lesson in which these rules could be better practiced and therefore better remembered rather than just reading a page of text.

I find that I have to read them more than once. After reading the notes I can commit some of the information to memory which helps me to do the lessons well. I would like to start to read and listen to french on a regular basis. The challenge is finding sources that will align with my present level of french. I am thinking of searching for french poets.

Is it because we don't want to see "du ananas" or "du eau"? Okay, that's all I have to admit to for now.

Thank you so much for including them! I haven't found them on the app yet, so maybe add that? I also like how there are unlimited lives unless you are testing out of a subject. The app only has a certain number of lives, and I think that it is easier to use then having a limited amount of lives. I also think that we should get a certain number of Lingots for going a certain mark over our goal xp. Just a suggestion. Thank you for being awesome! - Maddie_Kranz, Level 6 French Learner

Since I am having difficulty in the pronunciation of French words, it really helps to be able to see the correct pronumciation of the French word. It would really facilitate and speed up learning if there is a pronunciation that goes with the word. Thanks for the notes. Great help.

Best grammar notes ever! Just a very tiny comment for the notes under "Food" tree, "count noun, mass noun, or both" You listed "fruit" as both, but the example sentense for mass noun "J'aime les fruits" should be for count noun right?

That obviously won't work for the iPad app. Is there a way for mobile users to do that?

What if you had grammar notes also spread out through the lesson? This way one can really hone in on why they missed that translation :)

Very clear, with a good balance between detail & brevity. I'm 52 & I've been trying to learn French most of my life, yet I've already learned several things in the 'basics' grammar section that I never knew before. I think that "Ah, now I understand!" may well become a common phrase in my house from now on. Many thanks & keep up the good work. Lindsay

Even though I've nearly completed my tree I still find myself learning from them. It would have made my transitional period a tad easier when I first started, but I eventually started reading articles related to the unit before attempting.

I've just discovered this feature, and read the possessives part. This is extremely useful -- and more of this would be great! As a suggestion, I'd think that if a practice session reveals an area that needs work, maybe there could be a prompt to review the relevant grammar notes section.

Unfortunately this word does not appear in the lesson. Is this a mistake or I misunderstood anything?

                                                                                                                            March 22, 2015

                                                                                                                            1. Make them more obvious. I didn't notice them until I was on section 7 and wondering "why are they throwing new stuff at me without explaining!?"

For the "Food" grammar section, under "Omitted Articles", it would be helpful to have the examples have both a "What you would expect: " as well as the correct answer so we can see the difference.

To me, it does help by placing certain tenses & such in columns so it makes things easier to write down & keep notes. That way, when I am away from technology, I am still able to practice and study. I just LOVE the addition of grammar notes in the lessons! Also, doing away with the hearts in favor of stalling advancement is much smoother. Finally, though this is the French lessons, I want to say how much I appreciate that I can have multiple language courses. Keep up the fantastic, life-enriching work. However, pronunciation is posing to be a major problem. The audio is not very helpful in some cases .Maybe you could incorporate a lesson that focuses specially on french letters and their pronunciation ? Like how the letter R is pronounced as H etc, also the usage of English letters to indicate how a particular word is pronounced, would, in my opinion be extremely beneficial.

It would be even better if they were available on the mobile version. I also, think there should be a page (similar to the "words" page) that contains all of the notes from the lessons you have covered so far. That way, when I am looking to consult a grammar rule, I won't have to go searching.

Second: A few observations and several ideas how to improve the course:

                                                                                                                            1. Grammar notes are not available in Android version, for iPhone no comments either. Can you add notes to applications?

Why? It would greatly reduce clutter in comments - I started the French course and there are dozens and hundreds (!) of comments to the simplest things like "a boy" because people do not read grammar notes - no doubt comment from Android devices, I myself learned about grammar notes after a month of hard self-learning. I still see people asking things from grammar notes in Dutch section.

                                                                                                                            1. Why do all the work someone has already done - links to grammar references. I do not know where to look for it - too much junk and advertisements.

                                                                                                                            2. And the last but not least - pronunciation guide (or link to such). I have NO idea how to pronounce French words and it is very discouraging and hinders my efforts to learn the language. I know people who resigned from both Duolingo and French because of this.

But to improve readability can you consider displaying the text in black rather than pale gray. I needed to drag over the body text to select it so that it appeared in reverse for better clarity. And the entire Duolingo Program. It is in deed extraordinary! I always recommend it to people who ask me about English lessons. Last week I saw an amazing Puertorican boy who taught himself to speak English with Duolingo and he was starting to learn how to code from Code Academy, another fantastic free site. He was presented in a Ted Ed Talk. He was incredibly fluent, even though he did not have an English accent yet, but he was able to communicate in a very fluent and understandable Oral English. Another good for you and the kid! I copy the notes and I am saving them in a special file for DUOLINGO. At the same time I have a notebook, and I am writing everything in the course. I live in Chile, I am 70 years old, and I want to continue training my brain. When I was in highschool, French and English were mandatory subjects for us. My French teacher was fantastic! She certainly knew what she was doing. We could not even ask for permission to go to the ladies if we did not do it in French. Now I am learning "the dormant" language again. I hope to have the opportunity to speak it in Paris, and of course to speak English in Europe. I am a teacher of English, my native language is Spanish. I also have Duolingo in my Smartphone, and I have noticed that you can speak more when using the link from the cell phone. Congratulations, and thank you again. Keep up the great work!

Attendre "to await", which is why it does not need a preposition.

Il attend son ami. — He is awaiting (or "waiting for") his friend.

I was surprised that the testing part jumps requires the students to know verb conjugations but this isn't included in the lesson. I think it would be helpful if the lessons include introducing verb conjugations, or at least the notes should include full conjugations up front and the lessons should have a reminder to learn and memorize those before taking test to move on.

Verb conjugations are included in the lessons and also in the tips. By "jumps", do you mean the gold button that says "Test out of # skills"? If so, the test-out feature is designed for learners who already have some proficiency in the language. If a learner does not know the needed conjugations from above that checkpoint, he should go through the lessons instead of testing out.

'Sa' can be translated as 'his' or 'her' depending on context. In French, possessives agree with the object owned; e.g. 'sa pomme' can mean 'his apple' or 'her apple' (you need additional context to know which). This is in contrast to English, where possessives indicate the gender of the owner (i.e., him or her).

To know whether son/sa/ses means 'his' or 'hers', you'll need context clues from the remainder of the sentence; e.g., 'il mange sa pomme' likely translates as 'he is eating his apple'.

But because it starts with a vowel, "la" is elided to "l' " - l'eau - and its possessive "sa" is changed to the masculine form "son" - son eau (mon eau, ton eau) -

The notes are awesome, but when I got to the section "Verbs: Compound Past" there were no notes to be found. Notes would have really helped with this section in particular, since it's introducing a whole new verb tense. I ended up learning the necessary information from other websites, but it would have been really nice to have had the Duolingo notes to learn from instead. I liked the idea of knowing that if I ever had a question about something I had already learned in French, I could just go through the Duolingo notes on sections I have already completed.

Even worse, the next 3 sections after the compound past section are also missing notes. I haven't gotten any further than that, but I fear the rest of the sections are missing notes as well. Duolingo, if you aren't planning on including more notes after the compound past section then please reconsider. And if you're already working on filling in all these missing notes but just haven't had the time yet to complete them, then thank you and keep up the good work.

Clear, precise, and with an excellent balance of explanation and example. Please keep up the good work.

The male French speaker seems almost always to pronounce mute e's. Might you explain why this is?

Not only would you need to know all French words and can use them (and be tested on them), but you would also need to keep your tree gold at any time (knowing that the tree only has @2,400 words).

An average francophone uses between 3,000 and 4,000 words, scholars @5,000 - and there would be 140,000 to 270,000 French words, depending on what you call a "word" (for instance, any regular verb has @80 conjugation forms).

So this tailored approach is particularly relevant if you complete the tree. Otherwise, you can find French grammar all over the Internet.

I do practically all my work using my Duolingo app on my iPad, and I don't see them there. It was only when I visited the Duolingo website online that I found them. Now I understand why some of my answers were said to be wrong, when I felt they were right. Wish I'd known about these tips sooner, but I'm making use of them now!

However, there are many students complaining that you correct the English and not the french. (maybe there are people not English who want to learn french above english from you, and sometimes it is correct but sometimes not).

And how do I contact you directly? I find that the Grammar notes often don't cover items in the lessons. For instance, I am on Weather. The notes don't talk about how to say it is GOING TO RAIN. And they don't cover the difference between describing the weather with an adjective - chaud, froid - or describing it with a noun = a du soleil, a des nuages.

If you you want to be accurate, then keep vowel in brackets permanently. Just a though to making your notes more user friendly.

                                                                                                                                    "H" is a consonant.

It is always mute in French, in the sense that it never has a sound, but as in English, it can be aspirate or not.

It might be misleading, for example, to explain the elision of "le" as required in front of a "vowel", because this also applies to non aspirate Hs, which trigger a vowel sound, but not to aspirate Hs:

                                                                                                                                    • l'homme (non aspirate)
                                                                                                                                    • le héros (aspirate)

French is all about grammar, with its own 'French-minded' logic and you have to get the basics of grammar to learn French (enough to understand and speak), at least as much as you need to be able to read music if you expect to play anything valuable with a musical instrument, let alone to compose any piece of your own.
