If it were she it would be "morta"

I have no idea. It seems a possible translation (or DL wouldn't offer it, presumably) and it sounds fine to me as a native English speaker.
I also translate the phrase it is not dead , maybe a mascular animal like un cavallo
I am fed up with synonyms proposed in "hint" by Duolingo, which are not accepted. It's perfectly correct to say "Happily, he is not dead".
