Il boit de l'eau vs Il boit l'eau

I learned it before as Il boit de l'eau but it keeps on saying that il boit l'eau is correct. That doesn't sound right to me. Ils ont de l'eau. Ils n'ont pas d'eau.

"Il boit de l'eau" means "he drinks water" (general) while "Il boit l'eau" means "He drinks the water" (a specified water).
