A Chinese course will also be starting soon (sooner than the German one).

These are the first language courses on Coursera, so I really help they work out well and pave the way for future language courses on the platform.

The chinese course seems to not involve any reading or writing and is in mandarin chinese (as opposed to cantonese or other less popular dialects). Just a note for those who can't tell the difference since the site doesn't call it mandarin anywhere (which is kind of odd. . .)

It's not odd since from a common Chinese point of view, there is only 1 Chinese language with many dialects.

Yeah but they're not mutually intelligible so it's pretty important to know which one you're learning. If somebody takes this lady's course from bei da and tries to visit Honk Kong they're gonna have a bad time.

Well...no. http://blogs.wsj.com/chinarealtime/2012/02/24/mandarin-overtakes-english-as-hong-kongs-second-language/

Native Hong Kongers retain Cantonese as their "native" language, but due to constant contact with mainlanders, most of them (especially the younger ones) have a pretty good grasp of Mandarin.

Also, "Mandarin" has pretty much become synonymous with the word "Chinese", due to the Chinese government naming it their official administrative language.
