"In un anno" worked too, but I am guessing it conveys another meaning, as "In the year 2001"? "Tra un anno" maybe indicates that something might, for example, be ffinished within a year's time?

Why wouldn't "Nell'ano" work under these circumstances?

Maybe because that means "in the year" rther than "in a year"
