Position of adjectives and adjectival phrases

I get the impression that adjectives and phrases acting as adjectives which come before the noun in English normally come after it in Spanish. Preserving the order in translations yields very stilted English and in some cases incorrect translation. Can someone with better Spanish than me confirm my impression?

I don't know better spanish but most of the time I try to translate the sense of the text rather than stick to the exact order of the words, because to me it seems more correct.
