Other places where Dutch is spoken
It says that we are learning Dutch from the Netherlands. Are there any other types of Dutch and where are they spoken?
In addition there's also Afrikaans, which I wouldn't call Dutch, but it is still mutually intelligible.
Afrikaans is a language, not a Dutch dialect. It is strongly related to Dutch since the Dutch settled there and stuff (it wasn't pretty). It is a so called daughter-language. It also borrows from Portuguese, the Bantu languages, Malay, and the Khoisan languages, an estimated 90 to 95% of Afrikaans vocabulary is of Dutch origin (according to wikipedia).
I'm Dutch, and I have had conversations with speakers of Afrikaans (they spoke Afrikaans, I spoke Dutch) and that worked quite alright. So yes, it is similar, but not the same. Reading Afrikaans for me is like: oh I think I recognize this word am I correct?
