i'm abit confused!

i'm abit confused as to the rules on accents and sentence patterns can anyone help me out please!! thankyou :)

Accents mark the stress of the word. The basic stress pattern is that the penultimate syllable is stressed. If this is not the case, an accent is put accordingly. Here, this site shows the idea behind it. http://www.studyspanish.com/pronunciation/stress.htm

It is complicated. Besides the typical rules for accentuation, there are words such as "el" and "él", and "que" and "qué", that have somewhat different meanings or grammatical functions depending on the accent. Do some internet searches on Spanish accentuation.


Thank you for the StudySpanish link below. I need rules for accentuation because to me accents seem very arbitrary -- beyond penultimate syllable, etc. May I say that when DuoLingo pops in with "pay attention to accents" it is a bit like saying pay attention to the wind, very annoying. Ah, but we will improve.
