A tennis è migliore di me (he is better at tennis than me). migliori can mean better not best. Google renders "We had become better friends that day" as Eravamo diventate migliori amiche quel giorno (above). But Google is often wrong :-). So how do you say "better friends" (not "best friends")?

Italian comparatives can also form a kind of superlative, the relative one:

  • Lui è più buono di me / lui è migliore di me: he is better than me (comparative)
  • Lui è il più buono / lui è il migliore: he is the best one / he is the better one (relative superlative)
  • Lui è buonissimo / lui è ottimo: he is the best (absolute superlative)

The relative superlative is applicable whenever the reference is a hidden comparison instead of an innate quality: "Uso i migliori ingredienti" (I use the best ingredients - compared to what's available) versus "Uso ottimi ingredienti" (I use excellent ingredients - they're the best in themselves).

It could have been "ottime amiche" too, meaning "very good friends"

P.S. "We had become better friends that day" would be "Eravamo diventate amiche migliori quel giorno"; word order can change the sentence a lot :)

Wouldn't the superlative normally get an article like il/lo/la etc? Would this fit in this sentence as well?

Also I noticed some answers on duolingo use better/best interchangeably. But not this time, and at the last hear too. Shucks.

Actually I think I get it now. (after 3 more tries on the same level :P) . Even in English you don't say "we had become THE best friends". And I also get the order as peter explained. Cool.
