Welcome to the Danish Course!
Velkommen, vores kære elever, til beta-fasen! Welcome, our dear students, to the beta phase!
After almost three months of intense and hard work, we are now able to say that our course has reached the beta phase! We are very proud of it and can’t wait for your feedback!
We have been working so hard on this course ever since we started. Remember this year’s amazing summer? Yeah, we don’t. We sat inside working on the course all summer! But now it pays of! :D We are proud to say that we have created more than 70 skills and translated more than 16500 sentences – and if we should say it ourselves, we think they are pretty good. ;)
Nothing, of course, is flawless – but that’s why we need you guys! We gladly invite you to test our course. You should be looking forward to weird Danish dishes, zombies, ninjas, drunk cats, a scissor-stealing bear, and head-banging your desk in frustration over incomprehensible grammar. Sounds fun, doesn’t it? :D
A huge thanks to Duolingo for giving us the opportunity to make this course, to the teams who have kept us company when some of the skills were killing us, to our wonderful mentor and a huge thank you to YOU! This course would not be here without your enormous enthusiasm!
We hope you will love the course as much as we do. See you in the forums!
The Danish Team
Danish is out!
Now go get your late summer tans, you guys! ;)
After having done the first few lessons (I feel like a cheater, since I'm a native Norwegian speaker :-) ) I have to say that I'm impressed!
Small issue, when I level up the ribbon has the French flag. Did anybody else see this as well?
Speaking of Norwegian, i would love to one day see a Norwegian course. ;)
I am so happy! My life is complete…Danish and Irish…trembling with excitement! :)
This is exciting :D Danish seems pretty tricky right now, but hopefully I can start to get the hang of it soon, it looks hella fun! Thanks Team Dutch!
I'm sure you'll get the hang of it with time, keep practising and ask as many questions as you need! :D Good luck!
Finally danish is out! That's so awesome! Huge thanks to the fantastic danish team, I'm really happy for the course so far.
I've been following the discussions and comments everywhere about the danish course, and I've been waiting the whole summer for the course, as I am a danish native. I've not been able to work the whole summer, because I broke my leg in June in a water slide, so I've had a lot of time for Duolingo instead. Duolingo really helped me through that period! I've reached level 9 today until now, and I'm doing the final skills, so I can get my first owl. :)
I'm at a danish "Højskole"/Bible college right now with a lot of foreigners, and I'm already encouraging them to use Duolingo to learn danish. I told my teacher about Duo today. He has has a PhD degree and he's really impressed by they way Duo makes language learning simple, like a game.
Hej Tobias!
Thanks for the course! Danish is like Swedish, but the pronunciation will kill you :D
Yay! Congratulations Team Danish! You guys are awesome! After all your hard work, I hope you guys enjoy the beta phase and get out what you put into this course! I can't wait to give the course a go. WOOOO!
Hurraaaa!
Quality, been logging on for the last two weeks for this. Thank you guys for the course :)
Amazing. Thank you for all your hard work Team Danish! We look forward to helping get it through Beta! :)
Thank you. Finally my Norwegian friend who just moved to Denmark can learn some Danish!
Tak, tak. Han har prøvet det, men han slap med "you had a typo" alt for mange gange...
Præcis... Det skal vi have gjort noget ved. Dansk virker lidt for tilgivende pt.
Thanks for putting this to life - bjarke, runem, sofia. I'm sure a whole lot of people here on duolingo are very grateful for the huge dedication and love you three have put into creating this course. I tried to find good ways to learn danish for a while now and I failed. I've been waiting for the release of this course ever since I heard of it a couple of months ago. I'm really impressed how sophisticated the course is, even though it's early beta stage. You really have done a great job and you deserve a honest thanks from the duolingo community who now finally is able to study some danish.
I've been living here in Copenhagen with my boyfriend for like 1 month now, though without school or nothing I felt it's hard to learn anything. I feel dreadful when people outside talk to me and all I can say is "I can't speak danish". Therefore I'm deeply grateful for this opportunity to learn some danish through your course.
Hej Marina! I hold this message very dear. Thank you so much for sharing your gratitude and your story. I know I say this a lot, but I'm so glad that we're able to help you out. Congratulation on being at level 10 already! Godt gået! I hope you'll enjoy Copenhagen more now - how are you doing?
Hello Sofia, thank you for your kind words :) I'm on the highway with my bf right now. We visited his parents in southern Denmark. We are going back to Copenhagen now. I really improved big time in danish ever since I started learning 3 weeks ago. I'm able to read subtitles on tv with almost no problems. I can read well, though understanding spoken danish and speaking is still very hard for me. I will try my best to improve. Thank you once again. :)
Wow, that's amazing!! You go, girl! ;D You'll learn the spoken language soon, I'm sure of it. ;) Keep going! And if you need any help feel free to ask! We'll do our best to help you out. :) Please keep me updated on your progress, if you want too. Held og lykke! :D
Rome was not built in one day. ;) Let me know when we shall celebrate that you've finished your tree! ;D Thank you very much. :3 And you too!
I hope you enjoyed your trip. :D Glad you like the course. ^^ How is it going with it?
I love how Danish sounds! Two days ago I got to meet a bunch of Danish students, I learned a lot about Danish from them so after that I'm hoping to really boost my levels on the course now. tusind tak!
Thank you very much! I've been following your progress throughout the year because I'm planning to make an academic exchange at Aarhus in January! I'm so excited to start learning Danish :D
Wow, that's amazing! I hope you'll get here - good luck with it! If you want, please keep us updated! :)
I feel so joyous the course is out! :D I want to give you a big hug to show my appreciation! :)
YIPPEEE! Thank you so much guys! I've been waiting for this with great excitement, and it doesn't disappoint! I've just finished the first two basics skills, and the grammar notes are fantastic! Thank you! (I don't know how to say 'thank you' yet in Danish so you'll have to make do with 'Jeg er en kvinde og jeg spiser et aeble') :D
Haha, that's a beautifully correct sentence (this is not, lol xD). Thank you = Tak. Thanks a lot = Mange tak. Tadah! :D Congratulations on being a level 8 already, wuhu! :D I'm glad you like the course and the grammar notes. Thank you for your feedback and good luck! :D
Goddag!
Excellent work guys! As a native Dane I was disappointed when I wasn't able to ace the placement test. But I see I'm not the only one, so... Though it's flawed, the course is still in beta, but already quite amazing. Kudos to the three of you, you did great! :)
To perfect something = at perfektionere noget. :)
Tak for nyt ord :)!
Highfive! ;D Jeg håber du nyder dit ophold her! Hvordan har det været indtil videre?
Thank you so much! I am already at level 2! Something I noticed, though, that could be fixed is that when I go into my profile, the Danish flag looks like a French flag.
Thank YOU! :D And congratulations with reaching level six already!! :D The flag has been fixed, btw. ;)
I am so excited for this course (as evidenced by the fact I'm on level 3 already). Tak for all the hard work; y'all have done an amazing job! This is pretty much how I felt when I saw that the Danish course was open (hope this works; EDIT...oops, don't know how to embed gifs, sorry):
Thank you thank you thank you ! I was soooo waiting for eat, checking the progress every day... I am on it right now !
Haha, please, do not forget to eat! We do not want to be responsible for people dying of excitement, haha. xD
Ahah, I really don't know how I ended up writing "eat" instead of "it" ^^ A big hunger maybe :)
Hahaha best typo ever. xD I really thought you didn't eat, now I'm disappointed. xD
Awesome! Finally it is out! And I´m level 6 already (Ok I´m swedish so I know that's almost like cheating...;))! Thank you for all your efforts!
Thank you very much. Great job! :D Congratulations on reaching level 8!! I personally look forward to the Swedish course - always been curious about our "neighbor-language". ;D
When will the app be updated to show Danish? I see it online, but not on mobile.
The Dutch course has been out for a month and is not yet on the app. Unfortunately it might be a little while until Danish is there.
I use a combination of the app and the website, but with the app you'll miss out on the amazing grammar notes, so it might be an idea to start off a bit on the site if you can, until you get the hang of the basics.
I get lots of notes on the app. They've been very helpful with my german course. But I'm going to give the site a try. I just hate typing on my laptop.
Hej! This is MrsSiebert13 on Twitter aka Squiggles on FB. Glad to see another fannibal here. :D
Thank you so much, friends! I am enjoying Danish so much. The sounds are elusive, but so beautiful!
I'm glad you like it, ihhh, I'm so glad and excited, haha! XD All this positive response is making me smile "from ear to ear" as we say in Danish (and English? I really don't know). xD
wow... congratulations guys, your works are splendid, I've waited for this course :D btw why does the emblem for Danish course look like the emblem for French course? tak :)
Thank you very much for all the hard work! Ever since I watched the popular Danish tv shows I've been wanting to learn to speak Danish. ;-)
I downloaded an app on my iPhone, but it is nothing like DuoLingo. I also downloaded a text book + audio files for self teaching, but I had to force myself to study. Now that the DuoLingo course is out, I don't have to force myself, because learning on DuoLingo is so much fun!
P.S. the 'tips & notes' are exstensive and very helpful!
Hej Reisam! I agree - Duolingo makes language learning fun! :D I'm glad you feel likewise about the Danish course. I can see you're doing well already! Level 9, huh? Awesome job! :D
i am so excited for danish!! thank you so much for your hard work, i look forward to studying this!
Bravo!!! I've waited for months for this. I am trying to get a scholarship in Denmark, and hopefully the course will help me make that easier. Thanks a lot, all the contributors, for all of your efforts! You guys are doing a great job! By the way, I love your avatar pictures. They look pretty cool!
Awesome! :D Thanks a lot for your positive feedback (I love the owls too ;)) ! All our efforts pays of now. I'm so glad you guys like the course. :) Good luck with it, please feel free to update us about your scholarship and progress!
Thank everyone for your hard work on this!! I am an American that works for a Danish-owned company and speak to Danes on a daily basis. I am so excited to learn and I can't wait to surprise them!
Thank you guys so much for your work! I was not planning at all to do the Danish course, but I thought I would check out the first lesson. I was surprised at how much I like the language, though, and the notes were great--enough to make the grammar make sense but not so much as to be overwhelming.
I'm obviously extremely early in the course, but I think I'm actually going to continue with it as my "fun" language. I am very impressed with the course thus far!
I'm so glad to hear so. :D I'm especially glad to hear that our grammar notes are appreciated - they weren't that fun to make to be honest, haha. But it all pays of now! Congratulations on reaching level 6 - keep going and feel free to ask as many questions as possible! :D Good luck with everything!
Yayyyy! I can't believe it came out 2 days ago and I'm only just finding out because I've been so busy at work!!! Hopefully I'll find the time to study hard on this course, I've been so looking forward to it!! Thank you so much Danish team. You're the best!!!
Haha, you poor thing! I hope you don't feel too bad at missing the launch. ;) I'm glad you're excited for the course! I'm just so excited about all of our excited users, haha. xD You're awesome! :D
Hej danske Duolingo-gruppe
Stærkt arbejde med kurset! Det ser godt ud :-)
One thing I stumbled upon: In the "tips and notes" section of the number skill the word "snes" is introduced. I find that to be a bit misleading, since the word "snes" has nothing to do with the names of the numbers! For instance, "halvtreds" aka "halvtredsindstyve" cannot be explained as "halv" + "tre" + "snes", but is instead: "halvtredje" + "sinde" + "tyve", which are old Danish words meaning 2½ times twenty. (This also explains why there is a 'd' in halvtreds, but not in tres). Read more about it here: http://sproget.dk/raad-og-regler/artikler-mv/svarbase/SV00000047
I feel like I should have looked this up before I wrote it. I am very sorry that I wrote something that was not true, but I had heard it somewhere and found it to be a probable reason. I have now corrected the notes and it should be possible to see at some point later tonight/tomorrow.
I could never remember the Danish numbers until I learned what they meant. I'm glad you can include this explanation for other learners :)
Hooray! Thank you so much for your hard work!!! I've been waiting so long to learn Danish! Mange tak!
Thank you Danish Team for all of your hard work! I want to learn Danish to be able to study my husband's family history and culture (his grandfather came from Denmark), and hopefully visit the family homestead someday. So far I love the course!
That's great! :D Thanks for sharing your story, it's amazing to be able to help you guys out. Good luck with everything. :)
I'm so excited to keep up with Danish using duo lingo. The course is very helpful and so user friendly. I've already encouraged my friends to use it with different languages. Thanks moderators! :-)
Thank you! :D So glad you like it. :) Thanks for spreading the word and please keep doing so! We'll gladly welcome all our users and their questions and reports. ;) If your friends decide to use the course you can tell them to write on my profile and I'll personally welcome them! Good luck to you, enjoy your journey down the tree! :D
I didn't know Duolingo existed until three days ago but apparently I'm already addicted to learning Danish. Absolutely loving it! Thank you so much! (If there are any recommended basic 'reading in Danish' places on here or to buy good Danish/English dictionary recs, I'd love to know where to find them please.)
I've been waiting for this for a long time, well done and thank you! This is going to be a great help!
Thank you so much for this course! :D I am a student in Denmark and right now I am both taking the Turbo Danish class and also doing the Duolingo Danish class. Duolingo is an amazing site to help me with Danish! Heck, I'm better than most of my coursemates in Danish!
Thank you so much for this course! :D I am a student in Denmark and right now I am both taking the Turbo Danish class and also doing the Duolingo Danish class. Duolingo is an amazing site to help me with Danish! Heck, I'm better than most of my coursemates in Danish!
Tak team Danish for this wonderful course! I am absolutely loving Danish on Duolingo, again thank you for contributing. :)
I have been taking Danish a while now and I would like to thank you guys so much!!! Something clicked inside that has made Danish very enjoyable to learn!:)
Click on the Spanish flag next to your avatar at the top of the screen. Click 'add a new course'. Choose whichever language you like, including any of the ones in beta. :)
Thank you for the course it's wonderful! I just came across with a possible mistake with one task it was with possessive pronouns and in lesson 2 there was multi choice task with a sentence "you drink its water" and the correct answer was "du drikker dens vand" but shouldn't it be "du drikker dets vand" as the vand is et word? There wasn't even the option with dets so is it just a spelling mistake or is there an exception with rules that when the word is et it's mit, dit, dets and so on?
Hello! :) Glad you like the course and asks questions when in doubt - just remember to post questions in the discussion forum. I'll make an exception this time and answer your question here, but normally we don't. ;) It is correct that dets should be accepted, but it isn't because water is an et-word (though it is true, that water is an et-word ;)). It is because its is a pronoun. And a pronoun is a word, that replaces another word and change according to the word, they're replacing. For intance: I drink the girl's water -> I drink her water. Here "her" replaces "the girl". In this sentence You drink its water "its" replaces some unknown thing or animal. And since unknown things and animals can both be et- and en-words in Danish both dens and dets should be accepted. So as you see the pronouns change according to what they're replacing. I hope that made sense to you. :)
Thank you so much for the hard work. The course looks very impressive - I'm Danish so I hope to give a bunch of beta-feedback and then get my American wife to work ;-). Great work!
Hahaha, we'll look forward to the feedback - bring it on! ;D Mange tak og held og lykke! I hope your wife likes the course too. ;)
Hej Danish Team.
That site has been linked in the discussions elsewhere already by the amazing Danish Team. :) Unfortunately, the tts (audio) software that they use on Duolingo for the Danish course, I believe, is the best they have been able to find. We do have a Skype call every Saturday so we can practice our pronunciation and listening. We usually have at least one native Dane to help us...you are welcome to join us. :)
Just add danish.duolingo on to your contact list on Skype; once you do that, I will accept the contact request and add you to the group. :)
Hejsa!
I'm soooo excited to learn danish! I want to spend some time in Denmark someday, and this will hopefully help me! Thanks guys I really really appreciate it!! :D
I like Duolingo ...but it is infuriating. I have completed 'Basics 1' , 'Basics 2' and 'Phrases'. I can complete the practice tests without errors, but I a am still unable to figure out how to move onto the next level, namely 'Food'
