Any good French TV shows?
I have been watching French movies every night to train my ear, but I'd like to start watching TV shows which are shorter, and could prove more efficient for my purposes. Any recommendations? Comedies would be great, but open to any. Merci. :)
"Scènes de ménages" is short, quite funny. You follow several couples (three at first, then four) in their everyday lives.
"Plus belle la vie" is a soap. I personally hate it, but hey, many people watch it, so you could like it :) And there are many many episodes so that's a plus for your ear ;)
Comedies, comedies... "H" was quite successful a few years back. I think it's about people working in a hospital (hence the 'h') and the kind of humour used is "Jamel Comedy Club" (it was a TV show allowing young humorists to become known)
Now, if you want more dramatic TV shows, there's "Tunnel" (great series, French and British so both French and English are used). It's a thriller based on "Bron" (='The Bridge") (Danish/Swedish show). A corpse is found on the border between France and the UK so both police have to work on the case.
You can also try "Les Revenants". I haven't seen it but I only hear good things about it! It's about dead people mysteriously coming back to life.
Oh, I forgot! A comedy that everybody knows: "Un gars une fille"! With Jean Dujardin and Alexandra Lamy... They play a cliché couple: the guy is a macho, the girl is a bit stupid and only thinks about shopping. It's pretty entertaining! You can find episodes on YouTube.
There! I hope you'll have enough hours of French before you! ;)
Thank you, that's quite a list! I'm gonna get on it today. Have a lingot! :)
Most of these were quite hard to find, especially with English subtitles.
So I settled for The Tunnel and Les Revenants which seem quite good! and were also pretty easy to find, so I'm guessing they're quite popular.
I'll let you know how it goes! :)
I watched Les Revenants yesterday, all of it in one sitting! So goooooood! Can't wait for season 2!
Wow, impressive!! I'll have to watch it, then! How did it go? Did you watch it with subtitles? :)
I watched it with English subtitles, but I could still pick up a lot of things they were saying which is kind of the point! Someday I will watch it with French subtitles. It's too soon now, I wouldn't understand anything.
The show is quite good. Kind of weird in that French way they do so well, lol! But it was really intriguing. I kept wanting to know what happens next. This season was all about raising questions... What are they? Why are they here? Why is this happening?, etc... Hopefully next season we will get some answers! (Oh, and if you "kill" them again, they resuscitate again) They're kind of like zombies, but not really. :)
I'm happy for you :) It must have been pretty motivating!
Haha, I'll take your word for that! Pretty intriguing, really. I'll definitely watch it when I have time!
I'm gonna start watching The Tunnel now. Thanks again for the suggestions. :)
Extra might be what you're looking for: - 20-minutes long - Slow pronunciation, great for beginners - Has subtitles https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLAZxBB3JZTj7w3caHHt37WBmqVXSLyhw5
P.S.: It may be a bit silly/cheesy at times
I've been looking for something like this - Extras looks just the ticket, Ta!
"Fait pas çi, fait pas ça" is similar to Modern Family, if you're into that kind if humor (I love it) I watch it with French subtitles :)
its alright i don't need subtitles, i'm just on the lookout for some tv shows from france i might like. thanks^^
Hello, Mariana. Where did you find French subtitles for this TV show? I can't find it...
I got seriously addicted to a french detective drama called 'Braquo' - very, very good! 8.1 on imdb if that helps/makes sense
I like "Learn French with Victor" 25 episodes. French in Action - french immersion 52 episodes. They are both for learners and grows with you.
It was always strange to me that almost no one ever mentions "French with Victor", especially since so many people have praised "French in Action". Personally, I find these two mutually supplementing.
Check out Engrenages, aka Spiral (English title), on Netflix. It's sort of like the Wire set in Paris. So good.
Maddeningly Netflix have just removed series 1-3 of Engrenages - just as I was getting into it too! Ah well - Je devrai chercher ailleurs... ;-)
The phrase I learnt from Engrenages last night was 'ils avaient coupé la bite'. I hope it's not a phrase I'm going to be needing anytime soon! I was pleased to recognise the pluperfect though...
My favourite french tv series is Maison Close. It takes place in 19th century brothel in Paris.
I'm enjoying Peppa Pig francais on YouTube. The ones uploaded by JC have just one episode each - about 5 minutes long. I find that I can understand more the second time I watch them.
I somehow missed Peppa Pig when my kids were young. I tried watching it in French and was surprised how funny it is!
Try at least 1 episode of Friends with French dubbing. It is hilarious (and very easy to follow because it is so simple and straight forward). "Chandlèr".
Oh I don't think I can, I hate dubbing! It loses the character's essence. Imagine Friends without their essence! no way! Lol
if you can tell me the best french movies which you watched .. or all what you watched !! for me i prefer movies ^^
Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, a classic! (Amelie in English). From the same director, there's also Un long dimanche de fiançailles. It takes place in France during the First World War: a young girl tries to discover what happened to her fiancé, supposedly dead.
Intouchables is really good, it's about a Black guy coming from a poor background who works for a handicaped rich guy. Based on a true story: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Intouchables
And the music is just great...
La Môme, with Marion Cotillard playing Edith Piaf, you've probably heard of that one!
If you're looking for cult movies that every single French person has seen at least once, check out Les Bronzés, Les Bronzés font du ski, Le Père Noël est une ordure (same group of humorists), any film featuring Louis de Funès (the best ones: La Grande Vadrouille, La Folie des grandeurs, L'Aile ou la cuisse, Rabbi Jacob), hum... Le Dîner de cons would also fit in this category.
I personally love Guillaume Canet: he's played in Jeux d'enfants (romantic movie but quite...original...) or Jappeloup (if you're into horses...), and has directed two really good movies: Les Petits Mouchoirs and Ne le dis à personne (Tell No One, based on Harlan Coben's novel).
Cult movies, round 2: Ne nous fâchons pas and Les Tontons flingueurs. Those two might be less accessible for beginners because the humour used is fin, as we say... You have to really understand what's being said.
Dany Boon is quite successful right now: Rien à déclarer is by him as said by managerx. He's also directed Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis (it's about a "normal" guy going to the North of France to work and he has many prejudices about people there and their accent. Not always easy to understand said-accent, but the movie is funny).
I think that's... a good list ^^ Tell me how it goes! :)
waaaaaaw that is very interesting ! i saved your list and i will watching all this movies isa :) thank you very much / Merci beaucoup :) i think this will be helpful .. have a lingot :)
There are so many good shows and movies here but what sources do you guys use to find them, I am having a hard time finding shows online that come with english subtitles
I use torrents. You will find some with subtitles, and for others you will have to download the subtitles yourself.
