use "avoir" (avons) for temperature, and the verb "faire" for weather expressions (il fait chaud = it is hot (outside). For non-living things, you use "etre" instead of "avoir". Ex: nous avons chaud = we are feeling hot (temperature) BUT le café est chaud = the coffee is hot.
Nous sommes chauds would mean (in French Canada anyway) that either we are drunk or even something a little more off color. Not a mistake you want to make.

Just one of those things, in French hot or cold is something you have not something you are. Just like you have 23 years as opposed to being 23 years old.

As a side note "Il fait chaud" means "It is hot" whereas "il a chaud" would be "he is hot". You will find many more of these situations where direct English-French translations do not work.

Good luck.
