Why does "kartoffel" become "kartofflen"? What happens to the second "e"?
It's common for nouns ending in -el, -er and -en to drop the original e. For example:
himmel -> himlen
tallerken -> tallerknen
Although sometimes you may see both himmelen and tallerkenen, this doesn't happen with kartoflen
